Concepts of Suffering Ancient popular religions believed that it was “the careless antics of the sky-gods or the purposeful cruelties of the earth- gods” which was responsible for evil Platonists identified evil (suffering) as the privation or the corruption of the good Stoics saw evil and suffering as the result of “unreason and lack of self control.”
More Suffering Epicureans viewed suffering as evidence of the “blind way of the world from which the wise man withdraws as far as possible.” Buddhism designated suffering as inherent in self-centered human desire.
