1
A Biblical Paradigm for Ministering to Those Impacted by Homosexuality HOMOSEXUALITY AND THE CHURCH
2
FIRST THINGS FIRST Probably the most important question to ask first is this one: Is homosexuality an “issue” the church needs to address?
3
3 OPTIONS FOR BELIEVERS 1.Viable Alternative Lifestyle 2.Demon Possession 3.Conduct Disorder
4
Such were some of you “Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor homosexuals, nor thieves, nor the covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers, will inherit the kingdom of God. Such were some of you ; but you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and in the Spirit of our God.”
5
5 QUESTIONS I.What is homosexuality? II.What do our society and my personal experience say about homosexuality?
6
5 QUESTIONS III.What do the Scriptures teach about homosexuality? IV.What do we believe to be true about homosexuality?
7
5 QUESTIONS V.What do we do about those within our fellowship who have been impacted by SSA and gender- confusion?
8
I. WHAT IS HOMOSEXUALITY? Words Matter
9
A SIMPLE DEFINITION Homosexuality is: Same-Sex Attraction —SSA (SGA/SSP/SGP). “An enduring pattern of emotional, romantic, and/or sexual attractions to members of the same gender.”
10
BREAKING IT DOWN Homosexuality is: Multi-causal Developmental 3-Tiered
11
MULTI-CAUSAL Social/Environmental Psychological Emotional Behavioral
12
“The [homosexual] individual suffers from a lack of identification with the same-sex parent and that, upon entering puberty, the unsatisfied childhood needs are eroticized, which results in the individual seeking to fulfill these legitimate needs with people of the same gender.” Elizabeth R. Moberly, MD; 1983 Homosexuality: A New Christian Ethic
13
MULTI-CAUSAL Overly Sensitive Compliant: “Always a good boy” Cries easily Creative more than athletic Partial to more “feminine” activities Aversion to roughness/sports
14
MULTI-CAUSAL Same-Gender Detachment SG parent absent or uninterested SG parent hostile/rejects Insecure or overly strong attachment to other parent Rejected/feels unsafe in SG world
15
MULTI-CAUSAL Poor Peer Attachment SG peers taunt, tease, name-call SG peers don’t “choose” More secure with opposite gender Rejected/feels unsafe in world of peers
16
MULTI-CAUSAL Abuse Sexual Physical Verbal Emotional Spiritual
17
MULTI-CAUSAL Puberty Pre-puberty stress over one’s sexuality Doubt and sexuality stressors inhibit brain development Poor or late physical development SG fascination
18
3 TIERS Homosexuality is 3-tiered; it has three different “levels” or dimensions. I.Condition/orientation II.Behavior III.Identity
19
3 TIERS — TIER 1 CONDITION/ORIENTATION Involuntary; “discovered” Appears early and is deeply ingrained
20
3 TIERS — TIER 2 BEHAVIOR Sexual involvement with a member of the same gender Can be actual or vicarious
21
3 TIERS — TIER 3 IDENTITY Primary identifying life characteristic Acceptance of homosexuality as *normal and morally correct
22
WORDS MATTER *Normal Inborn or genetic God-ordained Morally acceptable/promotable
23
A WORD ABOUT GENDER Gender is a biological reality Gender is a core identifier Our culture has exacerbated the issue
24
A WORD ABOUT G.I.D. Gender Identity Disorder affect hundreds of thousands, perhaps millions GID is more complex and complicated than SSA There is no quick fix
25
Christians ought to seriously consider how our careless use of any of these labels or categories confuses the language of faith. It would be more fitting for the Church to speak of someone as experiencing same-sex attraction than to refer to him or her as homosexual, gay, or lesbian.
26
The Church has always viewed Christian identity in terms of our relationship to God. Once the Church succumbs to the idea that our basic identity is sexual rather than theological in nature, then the Church has already lost its way and is weakened in the discussion.
27
II. WHAT DO SOCIETY AND PERSONAL EXPERIENCE SAY ABOUT HOMOSEXUALITY? Our Context
28
WORLDVIEW MATTERS Our Anthropology What is man? Who is man? What is the purpose of man?
29
WORLDVIEW MATTERS Our Theology Does God exist? Whose version of God is correct? What does God require?
30
WORLDVIEW MATTERS Our Morality Who or what determines right and wrong, good and bad? Is there a transcendent “ought”, or are we left to self-determine? Do we accept the mores of others?
31
FACT OR FICTION? On average, 10% of the population is homosexual, with a much higher number being male than female. FICTION: The last part is true, but the first part, based upon US Census numbers, is less than 1% of the population self-identifies as homosexual.
32
FACT OR FICTION? Homosexuality is genetic. Researchers have found the equivalent of a “gay gene”. FICTION: No scientifically accepted, replicable studies exist that clearly demonstrate that homosexuality is genetic.
33
FACT OR FICTION? Jesus never addressed homosexuality and the Bible never teaches anything against healthy, loving same-sex unions. FICTION: There is a great deal that the Bible says about homosexual conduct.
34
FACT OR FICTION? Homosexuality is a personal matter and it really isn’t anyone else’s business. FICTION: The impact of sexual activity on those involved has always been a matter of responsible concern to society.
35
OUR CONTEXT The general context that we are living in today accepts and affirms homosexuality as normal, good, and right. This view is repeatedly endorsed in the media, entertainment, music, and literature— even that of our children.
36
EVERY STORY RELATES Like divorce, homosexuality touches every person in our society. “My [loved one] is gay; how can I say that they are condemned by God?”

3 OPTIONS FOR BELIEVERS 1.What the Culture Says 2.What my Experience Says 3.What the Scriptures Say
41
III. WHAT DO THE SCRIPTURES TEACH ABOUT HOMOSEXUALITY? The Truth
42
Romans 1:22-29 Very clearly speaks about men being sexually intimate with men and women being sexually intimate with women. 1 Corinthians 6:9-10 Those engaged in sexual immorality (homosexual conduct specifically named) is part of a list of those who will not inherit the kingdom of God. Leviticus 18:22 “You shall not lie with a male as with a woman; it is an abomination.” Leviticus 20:13 “If a man lies with a male as with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination; they shall surely be put to death; their blood is upon them.” A FEW PASSAGES Old Testament New Testament
43
THE SCRIPTURES Creation/Created Intent Genesis 1:27-28; 2:18, 23-24
44
THE SCRIPTURES The Destruction of Sodom Genesis 19:4-9
45
THE SCRIPTURES The Levitical Law Leviticus 18:22; 20:13
46
THE SCRIPTURES Paul on "Natural" and "Unnatural’ Romans 1:26-27
47
THE SCRIPTURES Paul and ' Arsenokoite ' 1 Corinthians 6:9-10; 1 Timothy 1:9-10
48
1 CORINTHIANS 6:9 Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor homosexuals …
49
1 CORINTHIANS 6:10 … nor thieves, nor the covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers, will inherit the kingdom of God.
50
1 CORINTHIANS 6:11 Such were some of you ; but you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and in the Spirit of our God.
51
FALSE DICHOTOMIES Many in the Church believe that there is a hotter place in Hell for homosexuals than for most other sinners and that no one can be Christian and gay. Many in the Church believe that the opposite of homosexuality is heterosexuality.
52
RESOLUTION believes obey “He who believes in the Son has eternal life; but he who does not obey the Son will not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.” John 3:36
53
THE WRATH OF GOD all ungodliness and unrighteousness “For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men who suppress the truth in unrighteousness.” Romans 1:18
54
The opposite of homosexuality is NOT heterosexuality … it is HOLINESS
55
2 QUESTIONS Can you be gay and be a Christian? Do gays go to hell?
56
2 BETTER QUESTIONS 1.Can you be guilty of any of the list in 1 Corinthians 6:9-10 and be a Christian? 2.If you are any one or all of those things, will you go to hell?
57
IV. WHAT DO WE BELIEVE TO BE TRUE ABOUT HOMOSEXUALITY? Our Paradigm
58
YOU DECIDE As a part of the Body of Christ, each fellowship must determine where it will come down on these matters.
59
YOU DECIDE Will we accept the Scriptural teaching about homosexuality and respond honestly and compassionately? Will we respond as the culture demands?
60
IDEAS HAVE CONSEQUENCES When we take any stand, we set up “dominoes of consequence”. Paying close attention to the last falling domino is critical.
61
V. WHAT DO WE DO ABOUT THOSE WITHIN OUR FELLOWSHIP WHO HAVE BEEN IMPACTED BY SSA AND GENDER-CONFUSION? Our Response
62
OUR RESPONSE Must be Biblical Holds fast to the clear teaching of Scripture Must be Christ-like and Combines grace and truth
63
OUR RESPONSE Must be authentic Combines humility and compassion
64
A Church Prepared for Ministry ACTION STEPS
65
PRAY, PLAN, ACT Pray Pray for opportunities; Plan Plan for the wounded to come; Act Act with bold love and no compromise.
66
3 GROUPS Militant Moderate Struggling
67
MILITANT Aggressive agenda Intolerant of opposition Raging Theatrical
68
MODERATE Socially responsible Morally upright Private Defensive
69
STRUGGLER Deep shame and guilt Confused about “really right” and “really wrong” Often rejected and defensive
70
MINISTRY PHILOSOPHY Needs to be defined and clearly articulated: Statement of Faith Theological Distinctives Ministry Foci
71
MINISTRY CULTURE Needs to be defined and clearly articulated: Who are we? What is our mission? How will we live this out with same- sex attracted and the gender confused?
72
EDUCATION:--WHO Leadership Congregation Specific Ministry Personnel
73
EDUCATION—WHAT Standard and Pro-Gay Theology Studies/science Causalities (Ministering to the underlying brokenness is the key.) Current laws, pending legislation
74
MYTHS Homosexuality is the worst sin of all; Homosexuality is a choice; Homosexuality is about sex; Homosexuals are pedophiles; Heterosexuality is the opposite of homosexuality.
75
Getting Dirt Under Our Fingernails ACTION STEPS
76
EVANGELIZE & DISCIPLE Develop a relationship: Invite to your home; Invite to activities; Invest regular personal time; Pray with often—no matter the issue.
77
EVANGELIZE & DISCIPLE Be vulnerable: Share your own challenges; Admit to doubts and ignorance; Laugh easily; Cry effortlessly; Repent often.
78
EVANGELIZE & DISCIPLE Be focused: Gospel-centric, not issue-centric; Christian vs. non-Christian; Center on Christ-likeness; Be fearless.
79
BE A SAFE PLACE There are Christians in your midst who Struggle with unwanted SSA Have a friend or family member who self-identifies as gay or has SSA
80
BE UNASHAMED Speak openly and without ridicule about homosexuality Helps them not feel isolated Helps them feel loved in spite of their struggles
81
BE AVAILABLE Listen openly and courageously Let them tell about all of their struggles No pat answers, no Christian-ese
82
BE A TOUCHER Non-sexualized touch shouts “Acceptance!” Hand on shoulder, hand shake, even a hug Ask permission first - help establish and maintain safe boundaries
83
BE ACCESSIBLE When they open up, they need to know they haven’t been rejected Call them, send a card or note Invite and accept their phone calls Be seen with them
84
BE BOLD They may not even be attracted to you SSA does not mean “Attracted to Everyone of the Same Sex” Homosexuality is not about sex, it’s about relationship
85
BE READY Healing is a process, not an event They may even act out more before the real healing comes As long as the struggle continues, there is hope
86
BE ENCOURAGING Allow them to be involved Attend Bible studies, small groups, prayer teams, church activities Allow them to serve as they are gifted to serve
87
PRAY, PLAN, ACT Bold Love Authentic Relationships Courageous Listening Be Consistent Be Patient
