2 Land Ordinance of 1785 Solved the problem: How do we get the money we need to run this new country? Raised money by dividing and selling all the western lands gained in the French and Indian War Land was surveyed and divided in 36 square mile plots called “townships” Each “township” was divided into 36 sections (each was a square mile or 640 acres) Each 640 acre section would be auctioned to the highest bidder at a minimum price of $1 per acre The 16 th section was reserved for public schools
