1
Rounding Fun! I can round decimals to the nearest given place value Let’s Round!

2
Place Value Think in your mind how you remember the rules for rounding...on your slate, write down a trick to share with the class (be creative) I like tricks!

3
Place Value Review On your slate, label the place value of each digit 5, Thousands Hundreds Tens Ones Tenths Hundredths Thousandths Ten-Thousandths

4
Rounding to the nearest tenth Locate the tenths place in the number 2. The tenths place neighbor will tell the tenths place what to do. Locate the neighbor- the hundredths place 3. The trick is: If the NEIGHBOR is five or more, add one more (to the place value you are rounding to) or if the NEIGHBOR is 4 or less just ignore (the place value you are rounding to) 4. The neighbor (hundredths place) is a seven, so what will happen to the tenths place?

5
Try It On Your Own! Round these numbers to the nearest tenth ,

6
Rounding to the nearest hundredth 5, Locate the hundredths place in the number 2. The hundredths place neighbor will tell the hundredths place what to do. Locate the neighbor- the thousandths place 3. The trick is: If the NEIGHBOR is five or more, add one more (to the place value you are rounding to) or if the NEIGHBOR is 4 or less just ignore (the place value you are rounding to) 4. The neighbor (thousandths place) is a two, so what will happen to the hundredths place?

7
Try It On Your Own! Round these numbers to the nearest hundredeth ,

8
Round to the nearest thousandths place Use the same rules! Find the place value you are rounding to and look to it’s neighbor to tell you what to do! - 5 or more, add one more - 4 or less, just ignore Neighbor thousandths place

9
Try It On Your Own! Round these numbers to the nearest thousandth

10
Rounding to the nearest whole When you are rounding to the nearest whole, you could be rounding to the nearest dollar, inch, pound etc. For example: Round $86.79 to the nearest whole. 1. Look at the decimal number (seventy nine hundredths) 2. Apply the same rule (5 or more, add one more. 4 or less, just ignore) 3. Since the seven in 79 is greater than five, the next place value (the ones-which is a whole number) will round up 4. $86.79 rounded to the nearest whole would be $87

11
Let’s try another one! 1. Look at the decimal number in the number. 2. Determine which place value would be the whole number 3. Apply the same rule (5 or more, add one more. 4 or less, just ignore) Round 6.8 pounds to the nearest whole Round to the nearest whole 1, to the nearest whole

12
Closure On your slate, write the rules for rounding we learned and another trick that will help you remember how to round

13
Follow-Up 1. What is rounded to the nearest hundredth? 2. What is rounded to the nearest whole number? 3. What is rounded to the nearest tenth? 4. What is 6.68 rounded to the nearest whole number? 5. What is rounded to the nearest thousandth? 6. What is rounded to the nearest whole number? 7. What is 2.83 rounded to the nearest tenth? You can do it!
