Twizzler Trick Pre-assessment of fraction knowledge using Twizzler candy Jeanne Chauvin West Salem Elementary

Day 1- Assessment of Fractions Place fraction posters (1/3, ¼, 1/8 and 1/12) around the room and ask students to walk to the poster that shows the amount of a Twizzler that they would like to eat. Assess which students get “tricked” by the denominator. see the video

Comparing fractions lesson Cut Twizzlers to show fractions from the posters. Distribute to students. Discuss comparing fractions with same numerators. Use symbols to compare. See the lesson

Day 2- Twizzlers again Use same posters as day 1 but move the location of the posters. Tell students to move to the fraction of the Twizzler they would like to have. Assess students understanding of comparing fractions with same numerators. See the results from day 2
