3 CONCISENESS To get to the point as quickly as possible... Resist the temptation to add a paragraph or two Remember your audience! The reader may be annoyed by unnecessary verbal ramblings

4 GET TO THE POINT DELETE UNNECESSARY WORDS & PHRASES USE ACTIVE VOICE... USE CONCRETE SUBJECTS & ACTION VERBS DELETE ‘PADDING’ AVOID REDUNDANCIES COMBINE WHERE POSSIBLE

6 Will the reader care about what you are writing about? Is the reader properly informed? Is the reader PERSUADED... If you lose your reader, you lose all informative & persuasive effect!

7 Variety!

8 VARIETY! Sentence construction Words NO repetition of selected words! It becomes very annoying when reading the same word or phrases over and over again

9 TONE  Can engage / put off reader immediately  Avoid rigid & lifeless tone  Write in your ‘authentic voice’  YOUR words!  Avoid humor – maintain professionalism

10 PATHOS Your ability to connect with your audience on an emotional level NB in persuasive writing How can I influence the reader’s emotional response to my writing? o Writing style o Factual composition o Emotive words Maintain professionalism, refrain from becoming sentimental / patronising
