Chan Po Yan, Nicole Chan Po Yan, Nicole Ho Ka Wing, Carol Ho Ka Wing, Carol Wong Ka Yi, Joyce Wong Ka Yi, Joyce 02 Group List (Group 5) 3A (15) 3A (20) 3A (33)

Introduction of the book  Book Name : Radar, Hula Hoops and Playful Pigs 【蘇老師掰化學】  Author : Dr. Joe Schwarcz  Publisher : 天下文化 The Author 

Introduction of the book  A book which introduces chemicals : WHO invented the uses of chemicals HOW some chemicals are discovered the chemicals protect us from diseases we make use of chemistry to improve our life WHAT are the chemicals contained in our food / drinks OVERTHROW the science sophistries

Science theories exist in mushroom Example--- Fly Agaric Very charming appearance After ingestion  Bring the illusion Psilocybin mushroom Fly Agaric appearance Interesting event (1) Captivating, mysterious and evil Mushrooms

Because Fly Agaric were cursed @_@? NO!!!!!!! Because it comprises of the chemicals : C ₂ H ₆ N ₂ O ₂ and C ₅ H ₆ N ₂ O ₄. They bring the illusion and amenity to the people. Interesting event (1) Captivating, mysterious and evil Mushrooms

I love getting illusions! I ‘d like to buy a pile of Fly Agaric ! Interesting event (1) Captivating, mysterious and evil Mushrooms DIE NO!!!!!!! Because it contains [CaH ₂₀ NO ₂ ]+ which is a poisonous chemical. They may be fatal. If you eat Fly Agaric excessively, you will DIE !

Other Psilocybin mushroom usually contains C 12 H 16 N 2 O and C 12 H 17 N 2 O 4 P Produce illusion Interesting event (1) Captivating, mysterious and evil Mushrooms

04  Laughing gas [ 笑氣 ] Scientific name  Nitrous oxide (一氧化二氮) [ N ₂ O ] - Named laughing gas because……  People who breathe in nitrous oxide will laugh How it was discovered? 1. A Britain Chemist (Joseph Priestley [1733-1804]) burnt the ammonium nitrate accidentally  Nitrous oxide formed 2. Test by Humphry Davy ( 1778-1829 )  It’s utility is discovered Interesting event (2) Anesthetic : Nitrous oxide

04  The use of it:  Use as anesthetic  Use to hold parties ( In old days )  Interesting event: Some people once used the laughing gas in the show  A performer in United States led the audiences breathed in it  Unexpectedly, a man fell down  The wound was serious but he didn’t feel painful Interesting event (2) Anesthetic : Nitrous oxide ↑ People who breathed in laughing gas

Interesting event (2) Anesthetic : Ether  Ether [ 乙醚 ] Scientific name  Diethyl ether [C 2 H 5 OC 2 H 5 ] How was it discovered?  A Botanist( Valerius Cordus[1515-1544] ) mixed Sulphuric acid with alcohol  Ether formed  The use of it:  Anesthetic used in operations [e.g. Tumor operation, amputation, parturition ]  Solvent of waxes, fats, oils, spices, alkaloids and rubber

Interesting event (2) Anesthetic : Ether  Interesting event A magician used ether to make illusion  Audiences could see that the magician was floating on air  The show surprised every audiences  Ether became popular in the society

 Sodium dodecyl sulfate [C ₁₂ H ₂₅ Na O ₄ S ] ( 十二烷基硫酸鈉 ) ( 十二烷基硫酸鈉 )  main component in cleansers  also major component in shampoos  cleans all the sebum Interesting event (3) Magic shampoos

Question 1 : Does Sodium dodecyl sulfate cause any cancer? cancer? Answer 1 : No. It is a ridiculous rumor. This chemical only makes hair become drier and only makes hair become drier and sometimes may stimulate people’s skin sometimes may stimulate people’s skin but it won’t threaten the lives of people. but it won’t threaten the lives of people. Interesting event (3) Magic shampoos ← Effect

Question 2 : So how to avoid the hair become very dry after washing? very dry after washing? Answer 2 : It is very common that factories add (CH ₃ (CH ₂ ) ₁₀ -CH ₂ (OCH ₂ CH ₂ ) n OSO ₃ NH ₄ (CH ₃ (CH ₂ ) ₁₀ -CH ₂ (OCH ₂ CH ₂ ) n OSO ₃ NH ₄ into the products so that hair will become into the products so that hair will become more tender after using these products more tender after using these products Interesting event (3) Magic shampoos ← Effect

 Shampoos usually contain OHCH ₂ - CH ₂ CH ₂ Oh / CH ₂ (OH)CH(OH)CH ₂ OH CH ₂ CH ₂ Oh / CH ₂ (OH)CH(OH)CH ₂ OH  can prevent the vaporization of water in  can prevent the vaporization of water in the hair the hair  Dimethicone ([-Si(CH ₃ ) ₂ O-] n ) ( 矽靈 )  is used to increase the luster of hair  is used to increase the luster of hair Interesting event (3) Magic shampoos

The events are interestingly explained by chemistryThe events are interestingly explained by chemistry Such as : inexplicable fascinating mushroomsSuch as : inexplicable fascinating mushrooms Some routines in daily life can be explained by chemistry  surprising usSome routines in daily life can be explained by chemistry  surprising us The reason why you find it interesting

Chemistry is related tightly to our daily lives Chemistry is related tightly to our daily lives ∵ everything is composed of many particles ∵ everything is composed of many particles Can concretely explain different phenomena Can concretely explain different phenomena through interesting events through interesting events Motivate us to learn more principles or Motivate us to learn more principles or concepts that are related to chemistry concepts that are related to chemistry The application of the idea from the book / how the ideas from the book affect your thoughts about chemistry

Comment and reflection (Carol Ho] As first, I think that ‘chemistry’ is just a subject about the boring elements and they are not related to us. But in fact the book mentioned how the chemicals contribute to us. And I discovered that many invention of chemical are by accident. As first, I think that ‘chemistry’ is just a subject about the boring elements and they are not related to us. After reading the book I will pay more attention to the chemistry around us.After reading the book I will pay more attention to the chemistry around us.

Comment and reflection (Joyce Wong] I think this book is rather interesting, funny. The author used simple chemistry theory to explain some inexplicable daily routines. Also, the book is quite easy to follow and comprehend.I think this book is rather interesting, funny. The author used simple chemistry theory to explain some inexplicable daily routines. Overall, I still think this book is a gripping book. It broadens my range of knowledge. 22 Chemistry is very important to us because all the things existed in the world can be explained by different theories, so I can have a deeper understanding of my surrounding things and also the world. Chemistry is very important to us because all the things existed in the world can be explained by different theories, so I can have a deeper understanding of my surrounding things and also the world. In addition, studying chemistry is useful since it motivates us to think logically. Therefore, I think we cannot live without learning chemistry and I quite enjoy studying it as it helps enrich my science knowledge.
