3 Why engage with standardisation? 3 Standards are a form of industry self- regulation Policy makers envisage a growing role for standards alongside regulation Standards may be referenced in legislation and compliance with them compulsory – e.g. Eco-design Directive for energy- related products Standards can shape industry practice and performance in the absence of existing regulation

4 How does the UK SNS work? 4 Monitoring the BSI work programme Identifying technical committees covering aspects of environmental and social sustainability Identifying UK organisations active in these areas to mobilise their expertise Coordinate the work of experts to participate in BSI technical committees Enlist the expertise of a wider network to ensure representation of a range of views and to support UK SNS experts Support initiatives to improve access for societal stakeholders to standards development Participate in ad-hoc projects by standards bodies, e.g. CEN SABE Resource Efficiency project

5 What’s happened in the past year? (1) 5 Developed close links with BSI and improved exchange of information Refined approach to work programme development and selection of work items Recruiting experts for a number of technical committees –Nanotechnology and materials –Electric vehicles and biofuels –Waste electrical and electronic equipment –Energy-using products –Biodiversity management –Energy performance of buildings –Air, soil and water quality –Energy management

6 What’s happened in the past year? (2) Participating in a number of BSI committees (e.g. Electro- technical environment committee) Working with ECOS to coordinate activities and increase our impact Representing ECOS on ‘Societal stakeholder toolbox’ and Resource efficiency roadmap projects by the European standardisation institutes (CEN-CENELEC) Raise awareness and outreach of the UK SNS through: –Annual event –Newsletter –Face to face meetings –Social media Fundraising to secure the future of the initiative 6
