3 EEpic – a lengthy narrative poem, ordinarily concerning a serious subject containing details of heroic deeds and events significant to a culture or nation. EEpitaph – writing in praise of a deceased person PPersonification - giving human qualities to animals or objects FFlashback – action that interrupts to show an event that happened at an earlier time which is necessary to better understanding SSimile - the comparison of two unlike things using like or as MMetaphor- comparison of two unlike things using the verb "to be" and not using like or as

4  Hyperbole – exaggeration or overstatement  Satire – a literary tone used to ridicule or make fun of human vice or weakness, often with the intent of correcting, or changing, the subject of the satiric attack  Imagery – language that evokes one or all of the five senses: seeing, hearing, tasting, smelling, touching  Foreshadowing – the use of hints or clues to suggest what will happen later in literature  Irony - an implied discrepancy between what is said and what is meant 1. verbal irony is when an author says one thing and means something else. 2. dramatic irony is when an audience perceives something that a character in the literature does not know. 3. irony of situation is a discrepancy between the expected result and actual results.

7 ElementExample The main character is a hero, who is often possessed of supernatural abilities or qualities. The hero is charged with a quest. The hero is tested, often to prove the worthiness of himself and his quest. The presence of numerous mythical beings, magical and helpful animals, and human helpers and companions.

8 ElementExample The hero’s travels take him to a supernatural world, often one that normal human beings are barred from entering. The cycle must reach a low point where the hero nearly gives up his quest or appears defeated. A resurrection. Restitution. Often this takes the form of the hero regaining his rightful place on the throne.
