10 Immigrants and farmers moved to the cities. Immigrants and farmers moved to the city. – Why do you think they moved to cities? They moved to the city because the small towns, where farmers lived, did not offer jobs. The invention of machines helped increase the products produced at the farm, and fewer farmers were needed.

11 Chicago was a fast growing city. Chicago grew quickly, because it was located near transportation routes and natural resources. – Rivers and canals linked the major cities. – People moved here to find jobs in the factories and shops.

12 The cities started growing. Why do you think the cities started growing? – Cities grew because the businesses and factories began to make more money, and were able to hire more workers. – Transportation was available in the cities.

13 What helped the cities grow? Railroads and boats brought logs from the forest to the city. Mills turned wheat and corn into food. Factories cut the logs to make lumber. Stockyards were a large fenced in area that held cattle.

14 The cities started changing. The first skyscraper was built. – The was possible because of the growth in the steel industry.

15 Technology helped expand the city. Technology allowed cities to grow. – How do you think having technology in the city could benefit the people? Thomas Edison and Nikola Tesla invented ways to send electricity to the cities. They used electricity in elevators (which helped carry people to all the floors in the skyscrapers), lights lit up the theater stages and electric signs, and rapid transit vehicles.

16 The cities started changing more. What kind of problems do you think this could create? – The cities grew nosier, and more people moved in causing crowding. – The people did not have enough places to stay.

17 Immigrants began living in slums. They couldn’t find good housing, so they lived in poorly built buildings. Slums are tenements, and these were not safe.

18 City people and immigrants helped each other. City people and immigrants helped each other find jobs and places to live. Jane Adams and Ellen Gates Star, were reformers. – A reformer is someone helps and supports ideas to make a change.

19 Settlement houses were built in the cities. Jane Adams and Ellen Gates Star opened the Hull House in – The Hull House is a settlement house, which is a community center for the people in the city.

20 What are settlement houses? Settlement houses are houses built to help the people in the community. – They could learn English – Get medical care – There were clubs for boys and girls – Working mothers could leave their babies in the nursery
