2 The Pitons are old volcanic plugs that rise straight out of the sea. A volcanic plug is the hard centre of a volcano that is sometimes all that is left after millions of years of erosion. 3 The guides say that when the smell disappears they will know the volcano will be about to erupt again. If it did that, it would wipe out the whole island and cause a huge wave called a Tsunami to hit the other Caribbean islands.
