3 Section 1 What’s the Story  Activity 1 Listen to the story and take notes in the space provided below. Do not try to write down every word! Only write down important points.

6 Section 1 What’s the Story (Script for Reference)  I went to church over the Christmas holiday and saw a Christmas play that meant a lot to me. The play is about an artist who made a sculpture at Christmas. A man came to the shop and fell in love with the sculpture but he was very poor and did not have the money to buy it. The man sadly left the artist’s shop.

7 Section 1 What’s the Story (Script for Reference)  That night an angel came to the artist’s in a dream. The angel told the artist that it is better to give than to receive something. The next day, the artist asked around the neighbor and found out who the man was. He called the man and asked him to come back to the shop. When the man got there, he told the artist again that he couldn’t pay for the sculpture. The artist then surprised him by giving him the sculpture. The man was so touched that he became to cry. You see, the sculpture reminded the man of his wife, who had died the year before on Christmas day.

8 Section 3 What’s the Story (Script)  Everyone was happy. The man was happy to have the sculpture and the artist was happy to give the man so much joy.  I enjoyed the play because it taught me that Christmas is more about giving than getting something. As a famous saying goes, it is more blessed to give than to receive. And this play taught me the meaning of that.

9 Section 1 Idioms  to ace a test: to make an excellent grade  easy as falling off a log  piece of cake: very easy to do  to flunk: to fail a test or course  My parents will be angry if I flunk the class and happy if I ace it.  Reading that novel is a piece of cake.  Falling asleep in the class is as easy as falling off a log.

11 Section 2 A Film Clipping Elephant Rage 发怒的大象  Script for reference  Elephants are gigantic and usually docile (mild) herbivores, but authorities say that wild elephant attacks are increasing. Why?  We know elephants are highly intelligent. They form complex societies and have rich emotional lives. But something is going terribly wrong with these remarkable creatures. These giants are exercising their power in terrifying ways.

12 Section 2 A Film Clipping  Why was this man attacked and killed? Why was this 10-year-old girl ambushed (surprising attack 埋伏突击 ) and trampled 践踏 ? And why was this elephant caretaker thrashed 摔打 and beaten to death?  It's estimated ten people die every week from elephant attacks.  Willy Tyson of the Pittsburgh Zoo is known as the elephant whisperer 传播者. He's searching for answers to the crisis.

13 Section 2 A Film Clipping  Tyson is considered one of the world's most skilled elephant care specialists. But the "elephant whisperer" says there's a big difference between connecting with elephants and controlling them.  "You have to be totally focused on these animals. They can turn on a person and be very very aggressive." Tyson knows all too well the dangers posed by elephant rage.

14 Section 2 A Film Clipping  Honolulu, Hawaii. Willy Tyson‘s close friend and mentor 导师, Allen Campbell, is a veteran 有经验 的 elephant trainer. But on this day, no amount of skill can save his life. A female elephant named Tyke is going for cirque. No one knows what triggered 引发 her behavior. Allen tries restraining 控制 the four-ton animal before she kills a grooms keeper. But the elephant turns on Allen. She’s lost in an unexplained frenzy 狂乱, rolling down Allen and crushing his body under 8,000 pounds of force. Tyson is devastated to learn of his friend's death.

I debated getting out of elephants altogether."  But Tyson didn‘t quit. And the mystery of what prompted 促使 Tyke to kill is now prompting Tyson to search for answers.
