Technology as the classroom vs. technology in the classroom: The academic impact of teacher interventions when using an online instructional program in upper-level primary grades. Lauren Geraci Southeastern Louisiana University

Introduction What is a digital classroom? What is online learning? What role does a teacher play when integrating technology and electronic programs into his instruction? Action Research

Students not receiving teacher interventions Students receiving teacher interventions PVPCardinal1 (blue) PVPCardinal3 (gold) PVPCardinal2 (red) PVPCardinal4 (purple)

Students not receiving teacher interventions Students receiving teacher interventions PVPCardinal1 (blue) PVPCardinal3 (gold) PVPCardinal2 (red) PVPCardinal4 (purple)

Students not receiving teacher interventions Students receiving teacher interventions PVPCardinal1 (blue) PVPCardinal3 (gold) PVPCardinal2 (red) PVPCardinal4 (purple)

Students not receiving teacher interventions Students receiving teacher interventions PVPCardinal1 (blue) PVPCardinal3 (gold) PVPCardinal2 (red) PVPCardinal4 (purple)

Types of Interventions PVPCardinal3: Academic: 3 rd person subject pronouns, consonants vs syllables, syntax (cleaner, cleaning, cleaned, clean), “cl” consonant blends Technology: restarted computer because touchpad froze, plugged in laptop due to low battery

Types of Interventions PVPCardinal4: Academic: verb plurals, 3 rd person subject pronouns, syntax Technology: delayed automatic update re-start, r e-opened active window after student accidentally clicked off of it

Analysis of Data PVPCardinal3 and PVPCardinal4 performed the best in the first 4 weeks Teacher intervention seems to have a positive impact on academic growth (especially since PVPCardinal3 had the lowest pre-test score) Technology interventions might be more impactful than academic interventions

Current Thoughts When considering the use of web-based intervention programs with primary school students, their level of technology know-how must be assessed before implementation so academic growth is not impacted. Blended classrooms might be a better option for primary aged students (for summer school or alternative learning)
