The garden The food garden is forming. A thick layer of poppy marc was dug in during winter but as of mid-September has not yet much decomposed. Still, the first sowings have come up and seem to be growing lustily despite the massive fungal growth in what appears to be more organic matter than soil. The red volcanic soil here is a loam, deep and rock-free, but with a fair content of clay, so when wet it “clags” the shoes.
