Elders Workshop Elders in the old Testament Numbers 11: 16-17 16 So the Lord said to Moses: “Gather to Me seventy men of the elders of Israel, whom you know to be the elders of the people and officers over them; bring them to the tabernacle of meeting, that they may stand there with you. 17 Then I will come down and talk with you there. I will take of the Spirit that is upon you and will put the same upon them; and they shall bear the burden of the people with you, that you may not bear it yourself alone. Exodus 3: 16-18 Exodus 12: 21-22 Elders in the New Testament Acts 11: 29-30 29 Then the disciples, each according to his ability, determined to send relief to the brethren dwelling in Judea. 30 This they also did, and sent it to the elders by the hands of Barnabas and Saul. Acts 15: 2-4 Acts 20: 17-21 There is a verse for deacons later in this training as we are to fit with that verse also.

Elders Workshop Duties and Responsibilities This is right out of the LCMS Job Descriptions Congregation Officer manual from the LCMS web site listed in the resources at the end of this show and if we do not have a job description we should accept this or a revised version as our job description. 1. Elders Workshop Duties and Responsibilities 3. The Board of Elders shall meet once a month, except up to twice per year they may be cancelled with consent of the pastor(s).
Elders Workshop Duties and Responsibilities 4. The Board of Elders shall consist of not less than eight nor more than twelve geographic elders, not including the chairman, such number to be established from time to time by the voter’s assembly. While the entire Board of Elders is responsible for the spiritual welfare and activities of the congregation, both individually and corporately, as a matter of convenience each geographic elder is assigned members in a geographic zone and then becomes the elder for these parishioners. Such geographic boundaries may change from time to time but no congregational member will be without an elder assigned. The chairman may act as an elder to new members for a period of time (less than six months) until their assignment/transfer to a geographic elder. Pending voters assembly approval, up to three “special needs” elders could be added to the Board of Elders by the Board itself. These “special needs” elders would not have geographic zones assigned them, but in every other respect would have full membership on the Board of Elders (one elder = one vote) and full responsibility.
Elders Workshop Duties and Responsibilities 5. The Board of Elders shall serve as special assistants to the pastor(s), supporting them with prayer, helping them with special problems in his ministry; and concerning itself with the spiritual, emotional and physical health and welfare of the pastor(s) and their families. Elders Workshop The Holy spirit has called us, to Our Lords church, as it is not our church, nor the pastors church, nor the congregations church, but JESUS’ church, and we are called by the Holy Spirit to serve as caretakers and caregivers for and of his church, to see to the spiritual wellness of the pastor and our flock in all things. Therefore we must be tested for our worthiness and this only through the Grace of God, by the Holy Spirit.
Elders Workshop 1 Timothy 3: 8-13 As elders we also fall into this area according to scripture. Qualifications of Deacons 8 Likewise deacons must be reverent, not double-tongued, not given to much wine, not greedy for money, 9 holding the mystery of the faith with a pure conscience. 10 But let these also first be tested; then let them serve as deacons, being found blameless. 11 Likewise, their wives must be reverent, not slanderers, temperate, faithful in all things. 12 Let deacons be the husbands of one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well. 13 For those who have served well as deacons obtain for themselves a good standing and great boldness in the faith which is in Christ Jesus.
Elders Workshop ISSUES OF TODAY! Would it surprise you to know Christians are no longer a majority. We are not. Our congregations remain about the same but Baptisms are down, Confirmations are down, contributions are down and we seen many graphs on all these and more issues. With a positive side at Iowa district west attendance seems to be on the rise, and these have all started growing some since 2001. I won’t go into all the functions there but will say for us to fully comprehend we need to understand the large families of the past are no more, as most families are one or two children and only one parent with them. The traditional family we grew up with and I know is only about 7 % of families today. About 59% are with one or no parent, blended family’s, dinks (double income no kids) POSSLQS (persons of opposite sex sharing living quarters), are we really serious, and other non Christian gatherings.
Elders Workshop ISSUES OF TODAY! Theological Illiteracy: It came up as important in the congregational survey Mike did so well for us. I was amazed and in disbelief when some of the elders at the training were having trouble with and not accepting or understanding our CLOSE communion beliefs Romans 16:17, I Corinthians 10:16, II Corinthians 6:14! Help me here pastor and fellow elders. As I comprehend and believe what I was taught in very simple terms, is that if I have a conflict with someone or something wrong in my life I need to go to them for resolution etc before coming to the Lords table so we do not eat or drink damnation unto ourselves. Also as Christians we are not to allow those around us to come to the table without the same biblical beliefs or without the same issues resolved or we allow them drink or eat damnation unto them selves and us. We should not be yoked with nonbelievers in this or anything. There have been times I have not come to the Lords table because of issues like this until I have resolved them with deeds and prayer as it terrifies me to think I would drink his blood or eat his body and be eternally dammed for it. Yes we are sinners and do not even deserve to be at the table with our Lord and savior but that is the miracle and joy of it all isn’t it. We are washed clean and forgiven all our trespasses with his death on the cross, his resurrection from the grave, and ascension into heaven.
Elders Workshop Things are changing. We appear to be in a post modernism post Christian world which is full of self fulfillment, Drugs, violence, pornography, abortion, child abuse, rape, consumerism and so on. Consumerism may be the biggest threat by providing to many choices for our needs. This enables and allows people to go to another place to find what they want so if we will not marry a same sex couple they can go some place that does which only supports them in their sin and approves of there sinful actions. Our young people and all people need and require tradition and we need to ensure as elders and leaders we give them tradition to live for JESUS in a spiritual and Christian life. NEEDS Need for Elders to be in the word! Need for Elders to be in prayer! Need for Elders to be in training for today's issues! Resource (Commitments of the Shepard)
