Andy Walton’s Weekly World Watch “If the watchman sees the sword coming and does not blow the trumpet to warn the people and the sword comes and takes the life of one of them, that man will be taken away because of his sin, but I will hold the watchman accountable for his blood.” Ezekiel 33:6 June 29 – July 5 2008
What is this world watch all about? I decided each week to look at key events that had happened in that week and look at them with the Bible in hand. I hope to build up a picture of Gods hand working in the affairs of this world bringing about that day when all nations will be gathered to Jerusalem to battle which will be brought to end when the Lord Jesus Christ physically returns from heaven to set up Gods kingdom. The key areas which will crop up time and again will be 1.Israel – Middle East the growing conflict 2.Europe – the developing union / political and religious 3.Russia – continued turning back to anti west ways 4.The development of King of South – US & UK 5.Declining moral standards and increasing violence. A number of Bible Presentations have been produced and can be ordered by. The presentations are audio / visual powerpoint CD’s. Move your mouse around to get the arrow and click the green link. Weekly Developments These are just a few of the events that have caught my eye in the previous week. It is in no way meant to be exhaustive – just a look at those events I saw as significant from a Bible viewpoint. Headlines These are always headlines printed in the newspaper – the date is always given and which paper. Normally the Daily Telegraph. (DT) Event This is usually the newspapers take on the events that have happened. It will always be a direct quote from the newspaper. Comment This is my take on why it is interesting from a Bible point of view. The idea of this weekly world watch is to give a quick Biblical perspective without going into detail. If more detail is needed please email me. Bible Quote This is normally one verse which backs up why the event that has occurred is interesting from a Biblical perspective. Please read in its context.

ME war threat rattles oil markets Headline Middle East war threat rattles oil markets Headline Daily Telegraph July 3 2008 Event A supply crunch and mounting fears of an Israeli air strike on Iran propelled oil to $143 a barrel at one stage yesterday, prompting warnings from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) of a severe economic crisis in poorer regions. "Some countries are at a tipping point," said Dominique Strauss-Kahn, the IMF's managing-director. "If food prices rise further and oil prices stay the same, some governments will no longer be able to feed their people.“ The energy markets have been seriously rattled by comments from a top Pentagon official warning that Israel may launch raids on Iran's Natanz nuclear facilities to pre- empt its acquisition of Russian air-defence missiles. Comment Israel’s name is now constantly being mentioned in connection with the rise in oil prices. As many realise, the main factor for the increase in oil is actually increased demand and lower supply. I.e. more nations are using more oil. HOWEVER… it is easier to blame one country than to blame the whole world for its greedy use of energy. We can perhaps see how the whole world will turn against Israel. Oil is the one thing that makes the whole world tick over. If Israel is blamed for causing the world’s engine to stall then every nation has an interest in sorting out the Israeli problem! In other words the world is beginning to say “Israel is affecting how much money we have in our pockets!”. There is nothing more emotive for a world focussed on mammon than that. Perhaps this is why the nations come to Israel to “take a spoil”. The nations may believe that the conquest of Israel would bring the greatest spoil of all. An end to the volatility in the Middle East and therefore revived economies! Bible Quote Zechariah 14 1 ¶ Behold, the day of the LORD cometh, and thy spoil shall be divided in the midst of thee. 2 For I will gather all nations against Jerusalem to battle. The conquest of Israel could be for financial reasons.
Headline Hoarding nations drive food costs ever higher Headline New York Times June 30 2008 Event At least 29 countries have sharply curbed food exports in recent months, to ensure that their own people have enough to eat, at affordable prices. When it comes to rice, India, Vietnam, China and 11 other countries have limited or banned exports. Fifteen countries, including Pakistan and Bolivia, have capped or halted wheat exports. More than a dozen have limited corn exports. Kazakhstan has restricted exports of sunflower seeds. The restrictions are making it harder for impoverished importing countries to afford the food they need. The export limits are forcing some of the most vulnerable people, those who rely on relief agencies, to go hungry. Now, with Australia’s farm sector crippled by drought and Argentina suffering a series of strikes and other disruptions, the world is increasingly dependent on a handful of countries like Thailand, Brazil, Canada and the United States that are still exporting large quantities of food. Comment The spectre of food shortages is casting a shadow across the globe, causing riots in Africa, consumer protests in Europe and panic in those countries that import food. The hoarding of rice and wheat has begun. Hungry nations will do alarming things. The consequences of this sudden increase in prices and hoarding of food has yet to be fully seen. The verse below speaks of the multitude of nations fighting against Jerusalem. But it also speaks of these nations being hungry! This hunger could be both literal and spiritual. Literal because of lack of food. Spiritual because of lack of God’s Word. Bible Quote Isaiah 29 8 It shall even be as when an hungry man dreameth, and, behold, he eateth; but he awaketh, and his soul is empty: or as when a thirsty man dreameth, and, behold, he drinketh; but he awaketh, and, behold, he is faint, and his soul hath appetite: so shall the multitude of all the nations be, that fight against mount Zion. Headline Iran ready to strike at Israel’s nuclear heart Headline Sunday Times June 29 2008 Event Iran has moved ballistic missiles into launch positions, with Israel’s Dimona nuclear plant among the possible targets, defence sources said last week. The movement of Shahab-3B missiles, which have an estimated range of more than 1,250 miles, followed a large-scale exercise earlier this month in which the Israeli air force flew en masse over the Mediterranean in an apparent rehearsal for a threatened attack on Iran’s nuclear installations. Israel believes Iran’s nuclear programme is aimed at acquiring nuclear weapons. The sources said Iran was preparing to retaliate for any onslaught by firing missiles at Dimona, where Israel’s own nuclear weapons are believed to be made. Comment This week the head of Iran's powerful Revolutionary Guards threatened to hurt Western economies by cutting off Gulf oil supplies if his country's nuclear facilities were attacked. About 40 per cent of all world oil exports flow through the 35-mile wide Strait of Hormuz, banked along its northern side by Iran. With world oil supplies already constricted, any Iranian action could push energy prices through the roof. Debkafile reports this week that Iran has divided the country up into 31 military sectors as part of its stepped up preparations for war. General Mir-Faisal Baqerzadeh, head of the Iranian Army’s Foundation for the Remembrance of the Holy Defense and MIAs, said the 320,000 graves were to be dug for enemy forces in case of an attack on Iranian territory! The Bible says that the final war in Israel will cause huge casualties. It will take 7 months to bury the dead in Israel alone. Let us remain on the Lord’s side until the end. For surely we do not want to be part of the coming destruction in the world. Bible Quote Ezekiel 38 11 And it shall come to pass in that day, that I will give unto Gog a place there of graves in Israel, …12 And seven months shall the house of Israel be burying of them, that they may cleanse the land. Headline Northern Israel told to brace for major earthquake Headline Israel Today June 30 2008 Event Israel's Health Ministry sent out an emergency warning to hospitals and rescue teams in the north of the country on Monday to be prepared for a major earthquake centered in southern Lebanon in the near future. The warning was sent after an inter-ministerial committee studied new seismographic information that revealed southern Lebanon had been hit by no fewer than 500 small tremors since the start of this year. The frequency and strength of those tremors increased during the end of May and first part of June to the point that they were felt across the northern half of Israel. Health Ministry Director-General Avi Yisraeli wrote that the current assessment is that an earthquake measuring around 6.0 on the Richter Scale will hit southern Lebanon soon. Yisraeli noted that "such a quake would particularly affect the communities of northern Israel, and would include destruction of buildings and infrastructure." Comment There is an earthquake coming but it won’t just effect northern Israel. In fact it will be an earthquake so large that the whole world will be shaken. The verses below come towards the end of the chapter that speaks of many nations invading Israel. God then brings about an earthquake centred on Israel that will be so severe that every wall will fall to the ground. It is part of the final judgement of the world. The 500 small tremors this year are a warning to us all that this is coming. We all need to prepare and get ourselves ready to meet our Lord. Bible Quote Ezekiel 38 19 Surely in that day there shall be a great shaking in the land of Israel; 20 So that the fishes of the sea, and the fowls of the heaven, and the beasts of the field, and all creeping things that creep upon the earth, and all the men that are upon the face of the earth, shall shake at my presence, and the mountains shall be thrown down, and the steep places shall fall, and every wall shall fall to the ground. Headline Terrorist bulldozer rampage in Jerusalem Headline Debkafile July 2 2008 Event In a rampage along Jerusalem’s crowded Jaffa Street thoroughfare, a bulldozer driven by a terrorist hoisted and overturned a packed 13 bus, while extending its shovel and plowing into several vehicles and pedestrians. The victims were Elizabeth Goren- Friedman, 54, Bathsheva Onterman, 33, and Zen Raluay, 68, all from Jerusalem. Bathsheva saved her six-month old baby’s life by passing her out of her car window before the oncoming earthmover crushed her to death. The father is missing and may have been in the same car. The bulldozer driver was tackled and shot dead by two policemen and a passing off-duty soldier. They clambered onto the careering vehicle and, while the policeman wrestled the terrorist to remove his foot from the gas pedal, the soldier shot him in the head. They stopped the carnage 200 meters short of Jerusalem’s big open air market and so averted a potential massacre. Comment These were terrible scenes of wanton destruction of human life in the heart of Jerusalem. To drive a bulldozer over men, women and children defies belief. This is the third terrorist attack in Jerusalem in 11 months to have been carried out by a group calling itself the Galilee Liberation Brigades which is said to be sponsored by the Lebanese Hezbollah terror organization. In yesterdays readings (below) we read that one day violence will no more be heard in Israel. But for now darkness covers the earth. But one day Zion (Jerusalem) will be a light to all the world. We long for the day for Christ to return and bring peace. Bible Quote Isaiah 60 2 For, behold, the darkness shall cover the earth, and gross darkness the people: but the LORD shall arise upon thee, and his glory shall be seen upon thee. 3 And the Gentiles shall come to thy light, and kings to the brightness of thy rising. 18 Violence shall no more be heard in thy land, wasting nor destruction within thy borders; but thou shalt call thy walls Salvation, and thy gates Praise..
