December 20 - 26, 2009 “If the watchman sees the sword coming and does not blow the trumpet to warn the people and the sword comes and takes the life of one of them, that man will be taken away because of his sin, but I will hold the watchman accountable for his blood.” (Ezekiel 33:6, New International Version) Weekly World Watch Andy Walton’s To skip the introductory slides and go straight to this weeks developments click here.
What is a Weekly World Watch? Israel: The continuing conflict in the Middle East and focus on Jerusalem. Europe: Its developing union, both political and religious. Russia: Its return to anti-Western ways as Bible prophecy’s “king of the north.” The UK and the US: Bible prophecy’s “king of the south.” Moral standards in decline and violence on the increase. WWW presentations in PowerPoint can be ordered as audio/visual CDs by clicking here. Move your mouse to place the cursor on the blue link and click.clicking here The idea is simple. It is to look at current events and compare them to events spoken of in the Bible.. I hope to build up a picture of God’s hand working in the affairs of this world. God is bringing about a day when all nations will be gathered to Jerusalem to battle. At that time God will send His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, back to this earth. Jesus will then establish God’s kingdom on earth. This kingdom will last for ever. This is our hope and the reason we watch. Increasing natural disasters: including earthquake, famine etc The following six themes will appear repeatedly in WWW:
HEADLINE EVENT COMMENT News Photo The source of the headline and the date are included. Each WWW looks at a few key developments that have happened during the past week. It is in no way meant to be exhaustive – just a look at those events I saw as significant from a Biblical point of view. What is in a Weekly World Watch? BIBLE QUOTE This is normally one verse which backs up why the event that has occurred is interesting from a Biblical perspective. Please read in its context. Unless stated otherwise, all quotes are from the King James Version. (Book, chapter, and verse) This is straight from a news report that caught my eye because it looked significant from a Biblical perspective, usually that of prophecy. Every WWW event slide has the following format. To reveal each block of text just left click your mouse or press the space bar. You control when it appears. This is the reporter’s description of the event. It is always a direct quotation from the news report and reflects the understanding of the reporter and editors. This is my comment on why the event is interesting to a Bible student. The intention of the WWW is to offer brief Biblical perspectives without going into detail. If more detail is desired, please e-mail me: (firstname.lastname@example.org).
This Week’s Developments To print any of the event slides that follow, click the picture on the upper right Significant quantities of oil discovered in Israel Palestinian statehood motion for Security Council Emergency recall of Israeli senior diplomats Europe's Israel obsession Vatican, Israel joust over Jerusalem site December 20 - 26, 2009 Copenhagen ends in blood, sweat and recrimination
Significant quantities of oil discovered in Israel An everlasting hope of finding significant amounts of oil in Israel may have been realized with the announcement Thursday that “significant quantities” of oil were found in a well in the area of Rosh HaAyin, a city located east of Tel Aviv on the western edge of Samaria. The Givat Olam (Hebrew for “Hill of the World”) Exploration Limited Partnership informed the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange of the discovery. The company’s stock more than doubled on the stock market, according to Globes. The firm said the oil was found late Wednesday night and that “more than 60 percent gas was measured in the drill mud.” The commercial potential of the oil field will not be known until tests and calculations on production and processing can be completed. Earlier this year, a huge gas field was discovered off the Mediterranean Coast. The gas is expected to be on line in three years and is anticipated to help Israel become self-sufficient in gas. It also is providing hundreds of high-paying jobs. If the Meged well proves commercially viable, it will further Israel’s longtime hope of being energy independent and is likely to strengthen the shekel against world currencies. Israel National News, December 24, 2009 EVENT COMMENT And thou [Gog] shalt say, I will go up to the land of unwalled villages; I will go to them that are at rest, that dwell safely, all of them dwelling without walls, and having neither bars nor gates, To take a spoil BIBLE QUOTE (Ezekiel 38:11,12) It cannot be coincidence that in the very same year Israel discovers a huge gas field it now discovers significant quantities of oil. In Ezekiel 38 we read of Gog wanting to take a spoil from Israel. The question has been - what does Israel have that Gog (Russia) might want? For a long time Christadelphians have said that oil might be the reason for Russia deciding to take a “spoil” from Israel. And now in these very last days (after 60 years of Israel’s reestablishment) oil and gas have been discovered!! This will surely make the greedy intentions of Gog awake and look lusting at Israel.
Egypt, Saudis secretly draft Palestinian statehood motion for Security Council DEBKAfile's Middle East sources report that Egypt, Saudi Arabia, the Gulf emirates and the Palestinian Authority are secretly drafting a UN Security Council motion granting Palestinian statehood within the pre-1967 war borders of the West Bank and Gaza Strip with Jerusalem its capital. This group is working under tight wraps, using diversionary tactics, to keep the US and Israel from discovering their scheme. Libya, or if it is elected to the Security Council, Lebanon will table the motion. Saudi King Abdullah, President Hosni Mubarak and Mahmoud Abbas have decided that if the US vetoes their resolution, Abbas will resign down finally as chairman of the Palestinian Authority and his place will not be taken by any member of his administration. The three Arab leaders are banking on the US being constrained from voting against the motion by president Barack Obama's avowed support for Palestinian statehood. The Americans may simply abstain, leaving 10-12 Security Council members out of 15 to carry the resolution. Debkafile, December 24, 2009 EVENT COMMENT I will also gather all nations, and will bring them down into the valley of Jehoshaphat, and will plead with them there for my people and for my heritage Israel, whom they have scattered among the nations, and parted my land. BIBLE QUOTE (Joel 3:2) Back on the 15 th November we reported in the WWW that the Palestinian’s were to ask the United Nations to endorse their independence and in effect announce the creation of a Palestinian State. This was reported in the Daily Telegraph. The Debakfile special report above tells us that things are progressing behind the scenes to bring this about. We cannot say for certain if Debkafile’s sources are correct but as the Palestinian’s announced publicly this was their intention it seems highly likely there are moves politically taking place with Arab leaders. Joel says clearly that “all nations” will be gathered to Israel. Why? Because they have “parted” or divided God’s land. An announcement of division could bring the final war.
Emergency recall of Israeli senior diplomats Israel’s ambassadors and consuls general serving throughout the world will discuss broad diplomatic and strategic issues at a conference to be held next week in Jerusalem. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, headed by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Avigdor Lieberman, will host a conference next week (27-31 December) for Israeli Heads of Missions. At the conference, Israel’s ambassadors and consuls general serving throughout the world will discuss broad diplomatic and strategic issues. This is the first time a conference for all of Israel’s Heads of Missions has been held. The idea is to facilitate direct dialogue with the country’s leaders, mutual updates on major diplomatic issues, and a discussion of action plans to deal with the challenges awaiting the State of Israel in the international arena in the coming year, including the Iranian threat. Israel Ministry of Foreign Affairs, December 24, 2009 EVENT COMMENT Therefore the LORD will cut off from Israel head and tail, branch and rush, in one day. For the leaders of this people cause them to err; and they that are led of them are destroyed. BIBLE QUOTE This is very unusual. For the first time in the history of modern Israel, all Israeli ambassadors and consul generals have been recalled to Jerusalem. On Monday, 28 December, the Heads of Missions will be guests of President Shimon Peres at the President’s Residence. Foreign Minister Lieberman will open the conference. Other officials invited to attend include Prime Minister Benyamin Netanyahu, Defence Minister Ehud Barak, Minister of Intelligence and Atomic Energy Dan Meridor, Bank of Israel Governor Stanley Fischer, and senior officials of Israel’s diplomatic and security community. The question is - why? Many people are saying that this could mean that something is a foot. Possibly war with Iran. We do know judgment is coming on Israel. We do know Israel’s leaders are not trusting in God. (Isaiah 9:14)
Europe's Israel obsession Baroness Catherine Ashton of Upholland (the European Union's new chief diplomat in the likely case you don't know her) isn't exactly what one would call "experienced." Perhaps to shed her much-deserved reputation as a foreign-policy novice, she used her maiden speech in the European Parliament to fuel the Continent's No. 1 international-affairs obsession: trashing the Jewish state. "We're deeply concerned about daily living conditions of people in Gaza," she told law makers last week. "Israel should reopen the crossings without delay.“ Almost as revealing as Lady Ashton's criticism of Israel was her silence about continued Palestinian incitement to violence or Hamas's brutal rule in Gaza. While lambasting Israel's "occupation," she failed to acknowledge that it is the Palestinians' refusal to restart negotiations rather than Israeli intransigence that stands in the way of a Palestinian state. Wall Street Journal, December 22, 2009 EVENT COMMENT The beast that thou sawest was, and is not; and shall ascend out of the bottomless pit, and go into perdition: and they that dwell on the earth shall wonder, whose names were not written in the book of life from the foundation of the world BIBLE QUOTE (Revelation 17:8) When the European beast was created on the 1 st December a number of new posts were created at the same time. One of them was in effect a foreign minister. The actual title is The High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy. This job went to an unknown British politician called Catherine Ashton. The United States Clinton Administration claimed in May 2000 that the post would be the fulfilment of Henry Kissinger's desire to have a phone number to talk to Europe! So Baroness Ashton is this person. She speaks for the whole of Europe on foreign affairs. And what does she want to talk about in her maiden speech? ISRAEL! Totally one-sided and pro Palestinian we see Europe emerging out of the bottomless pit with its original anti Jewish pro Arab stance in evidence before us.
Vatican, Israel joust over Jerusalem site The Vatican wants sovereign control of the Holy Cenacle. The cenacle (from Latin cenaculum which means dinner), is where Catholics believe the Last Supper was held. What the Vatican wants to do more than anything is water down Israel’s control over areas of Jerusalem. Even if it means taking a building here and a building there. It will put the Vatican’s foothold on mount Zion. The Vatican wants Jerusalem wrestled away from the Jews so they can continue to claim that Rome is the New Jerusalem. Israel won't be giving the Christmas gift near the top of the Vatican's wish list this year: possession of a Mt. Zion holy site where Jesus is believed to have gathered his disciples for the Last Supper. The Roman Catholic Church has been fighting for more than 450 years to win back control of the Crusader-era sanctuary, also known as the Holy Cenacle, which was seized from Franciscan monks around 1551 during the Ottoman Empire. Issues of sovereignty are particularly sensitive in Israel, where border and land disputes lie at the heart of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The structure on the Holy Cenacle site is believed to have been built in the 12th and 13th centuries, although parts of the foundation are said to date to the 2nd century. Israel seized Mt. Zion during the 1948 Arab-Israeli war in the wake of British rule. In 2005, then-Israeli President Moshe Katsav reportedly drafted a proposal to swap control of the Holy Cenacle for a synagogue-turned-church in the Spanish city of Toledo, but that plan fizzled. Some say the lack of progress is a reflection of the often- strained relationship between Judaism and Catholicism, and between Israel and the Vatican, which did not formally recognize the Jewish state until 1993. Many Jews blame the Vatican for fuelling centuries of anti-Semitism. Los Angeles Times, December 23, 2009 EVENT COMMENT So he carried me away in the spirit into the wilderness: and I saw a woman sit upon a scarlet coloured beast, full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns. BIBLE QUOTE (Revelation 17:3)
Copenhagen summit ends in blood, sweat and recrimination Gordon Brown and Barack Obama did their best to put a positive spin on it, but Copenhagen was a disaster. Just after midnight, Copenhagen time, Gordon Brown appeared in front of the Sky News camera. "I feel I've played a part in bringing countries together," said the Prime Minister, in a line clearly prepared long before the disaster unfolding around him. For even as he spoke, international unity was falling apart – and the emotional temperature inside the conference centre was already rising to levels beyond even the most doom-laden forecasts of the global-warming lobby. The deal cobbled together by five of the 192 nations at the summit was "the worst development in climate change negotiations in history," stormed Lumumba Stanislaus Di-Aping, representative of the G77 group of 130 developing countries. Such was the anger that one developing-country representative, Venezuela's Claudio Salerno Caldera, even appeared to deliberately hurt herself, drawing blood. Daily Telegraph, December 20, 2009 EVENT COMMENT And the nations were angry, and thy wrath is come, and the time of the dead, that they should be judged, and that thou shouldest give reward unto thy servants the prophets, and to the saints, and them that fear thy name, small and great; and shouldest destroy them which destroy the earth. BIBLE QUOTE (Revelation 11:18) All nations came together to try to work out how they can save the earth from global warming. It ended as all things do with mankind with anger, arguments, mistrust, greed, selfish aims and the list could go on! The recriminations as to who was to blame continue. Many blame Barack Obama, some blame China, some blame Third World countries and so this list goes on as well. We can see how mankind will end up in conflict and how mankind’s problems will only be solved by the Son of God physically returning to this earth. At last there will be a world leader not motivated by money, greed and short term selfish ambition. He will be a man to rule forever in righteousness and peace. How we long for that day.
