Relevancy One of the most important aspect of constructing your argument (b/c your argument is from motion, and for motion to be approved or to be opposed by the adjudicator) But... Many people fails to make their argument relevant to the motion E.g. THW call a local referendum for a natural resource project ➡ people down the line are the one who are most affected, thus have a right to decide their fate ➡➡ NOT relevant!(b/c you haven’t proposed for “local referendum” yet!)
Why Nuance Extraction? Each motion has different nuances, different background context Adj.Core sets... ➡ Theme of the motion ➡ Specific wording of the motion (e.g. ban/criminalize/morally condemn/oppose) ➡➡ Requirement of NUANCED / PRECISE ARGUMENT!!
Method of Extracting the principle ➡➡ Perspective of stakeholder （ モーションの当事 者の気持ちになれよ ！） ➡➡ (Relevant) Comparison with other methods （ モーションが要求する方法の独自性・優位性を説 明しろ ！） ➡➡ Conceptual Analysis of the Word （ モーションの 中にある単語はどういう意味か分析しろ ！） ➡➡ Broader perspective (intrinsic nature ＋ surrounding element) （ モーションに関係ある事象が もつ固有の性質や周辺的な要素を考察しろ ！）
Principle Adjudication Given that you’ve extracted a nuance from your motion, adjudicate whether or not the principle that you are trying to make is valid/justified or not Why, just/good? From what perspective? ➡ Usage of big word, in the specific context ➡ Exclusivity ➡ Object-based extraction
Exercise/Examples THW criminalize adultery THBT states that don’t provide free tertiary education should subsidize career paths for students that is useful for the state THW limit the construction of high-value residential properties THW forbid gambling to people with immediate families THBT priests should report the confession of serious crimes to the police THW decriminalize graffiti in public spaces THBT sex-tourism does more harm than good in developing world
