ICEWATER: INRA Constellation of Experimental Watersheds Cyberinfrastructure to Support Publication of Water Resources Data Jeffery S. Horsburgh, Utah State University David Tarboton, Utah State University Kim Schreuders, Utah State University Jim McNamara, Boise State University Dan Ames, Idaho State University Lucy Marshall, Montana State University Doug Kane, University of Alaska Fairbanks Amy Tidwell, University of Alaska Fairbanks Jan Boll, University of Idaho Nancy Hinman, University of Montana Mike Barber, Washington State University

Inland Northwest Research Alliance (INRA) Water Research Consortium - coalition of eight universities working in cooperation with the US Department of Energy – Boise State University – Idaho State University – Montana State University – University of Alaska Fairbanks – University of Idaho – University of Montana – Utah State University – Washington State University ICEWATER – INRA Constellation of Experimental WATERsheds What is ICEWATER?

ICEWATER Research Themes Snowmelt and runoff – Linkages between snow accumulation, snowmelt, watershed characteristics, runoff source areas, and water routing – Water yield and flow regime and effects of land use and climate change Groundwater/ surface water interactions – Improved understanding of the dynamics of groundwater and surface water interactions – Improved management of water resources Human altered systems – Effects of human alterations and water resources and management infrastructure and policies on water quantity, quality, and the hydrologic functioning of watersheds

Our Goal: An ICEWATER Information System Advances in water research are critically dependent on the assembly and integration of water data Collect, organize and share water data of interest to the INRA water research community

ICEWATER Data Point Observations – Stream gages – Water quality sampling – Weather stations – Soil moisture – Snow monitoring – Groundwater level/quality Spatially Distributed Data – Land use/cover – Terrain – Hydrography

ICEWATER Cyberinfrastructure – The CUAHSI HIS An internet based system to support the sharing of hydrologic data comprising databases connected using the internet through web services as well as software for data discovery, access and publication. Web services and Schema WaterOneFlow and WaterML to transmit hydrologic data in a standard way GetSites GetSiteInfo GetVariableInfo GetValues Discovery Hydroseek Analysis MATLAB, Excel, GIS, R, … Modeling HydroLink + OpenMI Access HIS Desktop Observatories publication and archival of field data store and share hydrologic data HIS Server ODM Data repository Service Registry catalog hydrologic data services and metadata HIS Central 3 rd -Party Servers include data from others

ICEWATER CI Architecture Each University creates an autonomous data node A central node provides support services

Ongoing Data Collection Data discovery, visualization, and analysis through Internet enabled applications Internet Applications Point Observations Data Historical Data Files GIS Data HIS Server Data Node

Publication of Point Observations Data Loading Data into ODM Databases – ODM Data Loader – ODM Streaming Data Loader Editing and managing data – ODM Tools Implementation of WaterOneFlow Web Services ODM Data Loader ODM Streaming Data Loader ODM Tools WaterOneFlow Tools available at: http://his.cuahsi.org

Publication of Spatial (GIS) Datasets Publishing spatial datasets using ArcGIS Server – Using OGC standards that can be consumed by a number of GIS clients

Data Discovery Via a Map Interface Internet Map Server using ArcGIS Web browser client Combine spatial data and observational data Launch data visualization tools http://odm.usu.edu/odmmap/

Data Preview, Visualization, and Analysis Time Series Analyst Web Browser Client Multiple Database Support Variety of plot types and descriptive statistics Linked to the map server application Enables data preview and download http://tsa.usu.edu/odmanalyst/

Data Node Website Data node description page Listing of published observational data services Listing of published GIS data services Links to the map server and Time Series Analyst Data Query and Download Page http://littlebearriver.usu.edu

Data Node Capabilities Web Service Publish capabilities of each data node – Listing of published observational data services – Listing of published spatial data services Supports cataloging of available services at ICEWATER Central

ICEWATER Central Website – Description of ICEWATER Network and purpose – Map server that shows locations of ICEWATER sites – Description of and links to CI components implemented at each data node – Catalog of available data services Data Managers support and discussion list http://icewater.inra.org
