GET REAL: Emotionally Healthy Spirituality Part 1: The Problem
Matthew 23: “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence. 26 Blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup and dish, and then the outside also will be clean.
Matthew 23:27-28 Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of the bones of the dead and everything unclean. 28 In the same way, on the outside you appear to people as righteous but on the inside you are full of hypocrisy and wickedness.
Real Spirituality Produces Change Surface Spirituality Outwardly doing the “right things” Religious activities Dress, language, conversation Can be done with little or no effect on the inner person Emotionally Healthy Spirituality Letting God change our thinking, personality, habits, and values Can be difficult and takes time Required for our lives to truly reflect the ideals we preach
Why Do We Need Change? It’s the point – “Do not merely listen to the Word... Do what it says” (James 1:22) Our lives are light to others – “In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” (Matt. 5:16)
