Glorify past − Past and present clearly separated − Present in italics − Makes past seem more important Glorify present -“upon his town, and all the mothers brought Their children, clamouring, ‘If we pay we starve’” (14) -Women and children vulnerable -Audience grateful of present
Peeping Tom − “his eyes, before they had their will, Were shrivell’d into darkness in his head, And dropt before him.” (69) -Byword -Linking to past -Name associated with the act of peeping “New men that in the flying of the wheel” (6) -New technology, making present good for “I waited for the train at Coventry” (1) -People couldn’t dream of it back then -Tennyson is lucky
