Presentation on theme: "Rebuilding Spiritually REBUILDING AND MATURING THE SPIRITUAL MAN DR. KENNETH W. JONES."— Presentation transcript:

Why This Study? Hebrews 6:1,2: Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God, 2 Of the doctrine of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment 2 Vs. 9(a) But, beloved, we are persuaded better things of you, and things that accompany salvation,  Let us continue to perfect and mature ourselves, trusting and relying upon God’s Spirit and drawing from the wisdom of God  Genuine salvation is accompanied by visible evidence

Looking at the Book of Nehemiah  The building of the Temple and the Walls of Jerusalem was more than a physical work, but a spiritual one  We are the temple of God. We will look at comparison/analogy of the work done by Ezra and Nehemiah and how it reflects in one rebuilding spiritually  God is constantly doing a work in you. The question is, “Are you yielding to His hand?”

Developing the Blueprint Nehemiah 1:1-3 The words of Nehemiah the son of Hacaliah. Now it happened in the month Chislev, in the twentieth year, while I was in Susa the capitol, 2 that Hanani, one of my brothers, and some men from Judah came; and I asked them concerning the Jews who had escaped and had survived the captivity, and about Jerusalem. 3 They said to me, "The remnant there in the province who survived the captivity are in great distress and reproach, and the wall of Jerusalem is broken down and its gates are burned with fire." 2 3

Describing a Physical and Spiritual Condition  The Jews who have escaped captivity – We who are saved have been transformed or transitioned from life unto death (Psalms 40:2)  However they were living as Survivors and not Conquerors  God has more for us than to be mere survivors. God not only wants us to be conquerors, but more than conquerors through Him who loved us (Romans 8:37).Romans 8:37  Nehemiah fasted and prayed regarding his response – As ministers of the gospel, the task of rebuilding and restoring lives to include our own comes through fasting and prayer, seeking God, meditation of the Word and reliance upon the Spirit (Matthew 17:21)

History  Part of Israel’s post-exilic period  Nebuchadnezzar too captives from Judah  The Babylonians destroyed the temple in Jerusalem  When the Persian government overthrew Babylonia, the King of Persia, Cyrus allowed 50,000 Jews to return to Jerusalem to rebuild the temple (Ezra 1:2-4) Romans 15:4 - For whatever was written in earlier times was written for our instruction, so that through perseverance and the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope. (Go Back to Nehemiah 1:1-3)

The Importance of Scripture  Scripture provides the building blocks of our spiritual growth 2 Timothy 3:16 - All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: Amplified Version: 2 Timothy 3:16 - Every Scripture is God-breathed (given by His inspiration) and profitable for instruction, for reproof and conviction of sin, for correction of error and discipline in obedience, [and] for training in righteousness (in holy living, in conformity to God's will in thought, purpose, and action),

Nehemiah the Comforter  Nehemiah means “Jehovah is my Comforter;” the Consolation of God; to breathe strongly  The consoling breath of the Spirit of God  Ezra (responsible for the rebuilding of the temple) means “helper”  Typology – study of types and prefigurative symbols – is common in the Bible  Jesus knew that spiritual transformation and comfort cannot come except by the Spirit of God who is our “Helper” and our “Comforter”

Nehemiah the Comforter –the Holy Spirit  Jesus talked about sending the Comforter (John 14:26; John 16: 7- 15)  Nehemiah, as a picture of the Holy Spirit, give us a view of how we can be restored and renewed from the broken rubble of our sinful past while we are reassured and protected from mockery, guilt and shame from our own selves and/or our Enemy/Adversary.  The Holy Spirit, our Comforter, intercedes and protects us as He directs a rebuilding of our human mind, soul and will.

We are the Temple 1 Peter 2:5 - Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.  Ye also, as lively stones - Living stones; each being energized with the principle of life, which proceeds from him who is the foundation, the corner stone  A spiritual house - A spiritual temple, not made of perishable materials, like the temple at Jerusalem net composed of matter, but made up of redeemed souls  An holy priesthood – Although there are the five-fold ministry, we all are priests, redeemed, anointed and ordained to offer up spiritual sacrifices of praise and worship unto the Father – presenting ourselves at His altar daily

We Are Building From Rubble  2 Corinthians 5:17 says that if any man is in Christ, he is a new creature.  Yet, as we come into relationship with Christ, there is still a lot of rubble that must be dealt with in our lives  The Jews had rebuilt the temple in Nehemiah’s time and were having “church” but the walls were still torn down and burned  This reflects people lives that still had to be restored, rebuilt, recovered and renewed  Each and every day we are building up from the rubble of or pasts, our hurts, our experiences, ancestors, and negative spiritual influences

Are You Rebuilding?  After the Salvation process, there must be continual spiritual growth and development  Most of what Christians experience negatively can be linked to spiritual immaturity  Generational sins while true, has become an excuse to many  Past relations, traumas, setbacks, can be overcome through teaching, personal ministry, prayer, and submission to God  Just having knowledge is not spiritually maturity, it is how it is applied and how the Word is handled  Spiritual Maturity overcomes Carnality – It is hard to receive from God and operate as God while one is still immature (1 st Cor 3)

Building From the Floor Up  How you build and develop your spiritual life and walk depends upon what state you wish to remain in – spiritual or carnal  Many Christians never advance because their foundation is defective based upon a continued carnal mindset  God is building temples from burnt ruins – broken lives, wounded hearts, stressful pasts, etc.  We need more than rebuild, but rebuilding achieved through partnership with the Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit Directs Growth Galatians 3:3 - Are you so foolish and so senseless and so silly? Having begun [your new life spiritually] with the [Holy] Spirit, are you now reaching perfection [by dependence] on the flesh? (AMP)  The Holy Spirit wants to finish the work of God in us which started with the New Birth  However, the pathway to growth is cluttered with obstacles from our past lifestyle, past habits, past attitudes, past sinning that we need to grow out of  Salvation solves the problem of gaining relationship with God, but it doesn’t dissolve the problems in your life

Not Everyone Will be Pleased With Your Growth Nehemiah 2:10 - When Sanballat the Horonite and Tobiah the Ammonite official heard about it, it was very displeasing to them that someone had come to seek the welfare of the sons of Israel. Nehemiah 4:1,2: Now it came about that when Sanballat heard that we were rebuilding the wall, he became furious and very angry and mocked the Jews. 2 He spoke in the presence of his brothers and the wealthy men of Samaria and said, "What are these feeble Jews doing? Are they going to restore it for themselves? Can they offer sacrifices? Can they finish in a day? Can they revive the stones from the dusty rubble even the burned ones?" 2

Persevere in your Growth  Not everyone will be supportive of our rebuilding and will challenge us  As disciples we should expect persecution, attacks, and trials as we seek to minister and bless God’s people  God is able to build from “burnt stones”

Scripture 1 Thessalonians 5:23 - And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. Amplified: 1 Thessalonians 5:23 - And may the God of peace Himself sanctify you through and through [separate you from profane things, make you pure and wholly consecrated to God]; and may your spirit and soul and body be preserved sound and complete [and found] blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ (the Messiah).

God Desires “Wholeness”  God Desires Us to Be whole, healed, complete, and mature in four areas:  Emotions – How We Feel  Intellect – How We Think  Will – The Choices We Make  Spiritually – Our Connection with Him  Such Healing, Restoring and Maturation will bring about Deliverance from:  Emotions– Fears, lusts, anger, bitterness, envy, jealousy  Mind - Confusion, doubts, corruptible thoughts and imaginations; reasoning contrary to the Word of God  Will – Double-mindedness; weak resistance  Spiritual – Disconnecting us through sin, rebellion, carnality, etc.

Time to Build  Continually Accept God’s Blueprint as His building project for your life  Encourage Others that God can build from burnt bricks – No mater how horrible or torn down their lives may have been, God has the power to transform, restore, and rebuild making you a lively stone – Alive and energized spirit, soul, and body  Ensure you have the proper tools – Without the Master Builder, the Spirit of God and the Word of God, you do not have the proper components for spiritual growth
