2 Are the Ten Commandments Binding Today?
Is the Command “Remember the Sabbath Day, to keep it holy” Still in Effect Today? Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. (Ex. 20:8) Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the LORD your God. In it you shall do no work: you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your cattle, nor your stranger who is within your gates. For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it. (Ex. 20:9-11)

3 Patriarchs Never Observed the Sabbath
Israelites Had To Be Told What To Do! Then the LORD said to Moses, “Behold, I will rain bread from heaven for you. And the people shall go out and gather a certain quota every day, that I may test them, whether they will walk in My law or not.” (Ex. 16:4) And so it was, on the sixth day, that they gathered twice as much bread, two omers for each one. And all the rulers of the congregation came and told Moses. Then he said to them, This is what the LORD has said: “Tomorrow is a Sabbath rest, a holy Sabbath to the LORD. Bake what you will bake today, and boil what you will boil; and lay up for yourselves all that remains, to be kept until morning.” So they laid it up till morning, as Moses commanded… (Exodus 16:22-24)

4 Sabbath Given to Israel
And God spoke all these words, saying: “I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage….Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. ” (Ex. 20:1-2, 8) And Moses called all Israel, and said to them: “Hear, O Israel, the statutes and judgments which I speak in your hearing today, that you may learn them and be careful to observe them. The LORD our God made a covenant with us in Horeb. The LORD did not make this covenant with our fathers, but with us, those who are here today, all of us who are alive.” (Deut. 5:1-3)

5 Sabbath Purpose Observe the Sabbath day, to keep it holy, as the LORD your God commanded you….And remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and the LORD your God brought you out from there by a mighty hand and by an outstretched arm; therefore the LORD your God commanded you to keep the Sabbath day. (Deut. 5:12, 15)

6 Sign Between God and Israel
Sabbath Sign Between God and Israel And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, “Speak also to the children of Israel, saying: Surely My Sabbaths you shall keep, for it is a sign between Me and you throughout your generations, that you may know that I am the LORD who sanctifies you. You shall keep the Sabbath, therefore, for it is holy to you.…the children of Israel shall keep the Sabbath, to observe the Sabbath throughout their generations as a perpetual covenant. It is a sign between Me and the children of Israel forever; for in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, and on the seventh day He rested and was refreshed.” (Ex. 31:12-17)

7 Sign Between God and Israel
Sabbath Sign Between God and Israel Therefore I made them go out of the land of Egypt and brought them into the wilderness. And I gave them My statutes and showed them My judgments, which, if a man does, he shall live by them. Moreover I also gave them My Sabbaths, to be a sign between them and Me, that they might know that I am the LORD who sanctifies them. (Ezek. 20:10-12)

8 Sabbath Regulations DAY OF REST: You shall keep the Sabbath, therefore, for it is holy to you. Everyone who profanes it shall surely be put to death…Work shall be done for six days, but the seventh is the Sabbath of rest, holy to the LORD. Whoever does any work on the Sabbath day, he shall surely be put to death. (Ex. 31:14-15) NO WORK, NO FIRE, i.e. NO COOKING: …Work shall be done for six days, but the seventh day shall be a holy day for you, a Sabbath of rest to the LORD. Whoever does any work on it shall be put to death. You shall kindle no fire throughout your dwellings on the Sabbath day. (Ex. 35:1-3; 20:8-10)

9 Sabbath Regulations TRAVEL RESTRICTIONS: See! For the LORD has given you the Sabbath; therefore He gives you on the sixth day bread for two days. Let every man remain in his place; let no man go out of his place on the seventh day. (Ex. 16:29) Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is near Jerusalem, a Sabbath day's journey. (Acts 1:12)

10 Sabbath Regulations BURNT OFFERINGS: And on the Sabbath day two lambs in their first year, without blemish, and two-tenths of an ephah of fine flour as a grain offering, mixed with oil, with its drink offering- this is the burnt offering for every Sabbath, besides the regular burnt offering with its drink offering. (Num. 28:9-10) The king also appointed a portion of his possessions for the burnt offerings: for the morning and evening burnt offerings, the burnt offerings for the Sabbaths and the New Moons and the set feasts, as it is written in the Law of the LORD (2 Chron. 31:3)

11 Sabbath Regulations REMEMBRANCE: And remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and the LORD your God brought you out from there by a mighty hand and by an outstretched arm; therefore the LORD your God commanded you to keep the Sabbath day. (Deut. 5:15) Day of Rest: No Work, No Fire…. Travel Restricted Day of Worship: Burnt Offerings Day of Remembrance: Deliverance From Egyptian Slavery

12 Sabbath Penalty for Violation
DAY OF REST: You shall keep the Sabbath, therefore, for it is holy to you. Everyone who profanes it shall surely be put to death…Work shall be done for six days, but the seventh is the Sabbath of rest, holy to the LORD. Whoever does any work on the Sabbath day, he shall surely be put to death. (Ex. 31:14-15) …They found a man gathering sticks on the Sabbath day… They put him under guard, because it had not been explained what should be done to him. Then the LORD said to Moses, “The man must surely be put to death; all the congregation shall stone him with stones outside the camp...” (Num. 15:32-36)

13 The Bible Makes No Such Distinction!
To Bypass the Regulations & Penalty Sabbatarians Teach: The Law of God and the Law of Moses are different laws. The Ten Commandments, which includes the Sabbath, is the Law of God, and is still binding today. The Law of Moses is merely the ceremonial law, and that law has been done away with. The Bible Makes No Such Distinction!

14 Law of God = Law of Moses And when they brought out the money that was brought into the house of the Lord, Hilkiah the priest found a book of the law of the Lord given by Moses. (2 Chron. 34:14) Ezra came up from Babylon; and he was a skilled scribe in the Law of Moses, which the LORD God of Israel had given. (Ezra 7:6) Moses said, honor thy father and thy mother. (Mark 7:10)

15 Law of God = Law of Moses The king also appointed a portion of his possessions for the burnt offerings: for the morning and evening burnt offerings, the burnt offerings for the Sabbaths and the New Moons and the set feasts, as it is written in the Law of the LORD (2 Chron. 31:3) Ever read about burnt offerings in the Ten Commandments? Now all the people gathered together as one man in the open square that was in front of the Water Gate; and they told Ezra the scribe to bring the Book of the Law of Moses, which the LORD had commanded Israel. (Neh. 8:1)

16 Law of God = Law of Moses Now when the days of her purification according to the law of Moses were completed, they brought Him to Jerusalem to present Him to the Lord (as it is written in the law of the Lord, “Every male who opens the womb shall be called holy to the LORD”), and to offer a sacrifice according to what is said in the law of the Lord, “A pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons.” (Luke 2:22-24) There is no difference between the Law of God and the Law of Moses – the Only Reason a distinction is made is to bind Sabbath Keeping today!

17 The Covenant, Including the Ten Commandments, Done Away in Christ
Nothing was in the ark except the two tablets of stone which Moses put there at Horeb, when the LORD made a covenant with the children of Israel, when they came out of the land of Egypt…And there I have made a place for the ark, in which is the covenant of the LORD which He made with our fathers, when He brought them out of the land of Egypt. (1 Kings 8:9, 21)

18 The Covenant, Including the Ten Commandments, Done Away in Christ
So He declared to you His covenant which He commanded you to perform, the Ten Commandments; and He wrote them on two tablets of stone. (Deut.4:13) So he was there with the LORD forty days and forty nights; he neither ate bread nor drank water. And He wrote on the tablets the words of the covenant, the Ten Commandments. (Ex. 34:28)

19 The Covenant, Including the Ten Commandments, Done Away in Christ
For if that first covenant had been faultless, then no place would have been sought for a second. Because finding fault with them, He says: “Behold, the days are coming, says the LORD, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah–not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt; because they did not continue in My covenant, and I disregarded them, says the LORD.” (Heb. 8:7-9) In that He says, “A new covenant,” He has made the first obsolete. Now what is becoming obsolete and growing old is ready to vanish away. (Heb. 8:13)

20 The Covenant, Including the Ten Commandments, Done Away in Christ
Nailed to the Cross Having wiped out the handwriting of requirements that was against us, which was contrary to us. And He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross. (Col. 2:14) So let no one judge you in food or in drink, or regarding a festival or a new moon or Sabbaths, which are a shadow of things to come, but the substance is of Christ. (Col. 2:16-17)

21 The Covenant, Including the Ten Commandments, Done Away in Christ
Who also made us sufficient as ministers of the new covenant…But if the ministry of death, written and engraved on stones, was glorious, so that the children of Israel could not look steadily at the face of Moses because of the glory of his countenance, which glory was passing away, how will the ministry of the Spirit not be more glorious? …if what is passing away was glorious, what remains is much more glorious. Therefore…we use great boldness of speech-- unlike Moses, who put a veil over his face so that the children of Israel could not look steadily at the end of what was passing away. But their minds were blinded. For until this day the same veil remains unlifted in the reading of the Old Testament, because the veil is taken away in Christ. (2 Cor. 3:6-14)

22 The Law of Commandments Abolished in Christ
Nailed to the Cross For He Himself is our peace, who has made both one, and has broken down the middle wall of separation, having abolished in His flesh the enmity, that is, the law of commandments contained in ordinances, so as to create in Himself one new man from the two, thus making peace, and that He might reconcile them both to God in one body through the cross, thereby putting to death the enmity. (Eph. 2:14-16)

23 The First Day of the Week The Day of Worship for Christians
Christ arose from the dead. (Mark 16:9; Luke 24:1) Jesus met with his disciples after His Resurrection on the First Day of the Week. (John 20:1,19, 26) Great events of Acts 2: Pentecost day always came on the first day of the week (Lev. 23:15). The first gospel sermon was preached (Acts 2:22-36). The Lord's church had its beginning as men heard, believed and were baptized “for the remission of their sins” (Acts 2:38, 47).

24 The First Day of the Week The Day The Church Assembled
For first of all, when you come together as a church…Therefore when you come together in one place, it is not to eat the Lord's Supper. (1 Cor. 11:18-20) Therefore if the whole church comes together in one place, and all speak with tongues… (1 Cor. 14:23) Now on the first day of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread… (Acts 20:7) Now concerning the collection for the saints, as I have given orders to the churches of Galatia, so you must do also: On the first day of the week let each one of you lay something aside… (1 Cor. 16:1-2)
