[Web] Geoprocessing A Practical Approach Castellón, June 2014 Javier Abadía Technical Marketing, ESRI España

What is Geo-Processing? Apply [geographical] functionality to [geographical] data - Transform Data (ETL) - Batch Processing - Analyze Data

Analyze Data Transforming data into decisions

ArcGIS Geoprocessing Engine Composable tools Thousands of tools Model Builder Generic UI Python - Use the tools from python - Include python in the tools [and anything you can call from python] Embedded in ArcGIS software across desktop, server, cloud, mobile… DEMO

GeoProcessing Models DEMO

Geo-processing is a service Simple request Complex elaboration Simple Request - Simple input parameters - Simple output results Complex elaboration - Complex processing - Complex geographic data

Geoprocessing is a Service

Simple Request Simple Input Parameters Simple Output Results

Complex Processing Complex Geographic Data

Services is what Web is all about request → response KVP SOAP REST

Web Geoprocessing DEMO

What about WPS? Was published in 2007 GP is congruent with WPS All GP services support WPS interface - Same approach as WMS, WFS in ArcGIS - Just “check a box” REST interface is way simpler - arguably more open - not easy to find a well implemented WPS client DEMO

Summary Geoprocessing is a Service - Simple inputs, Simple outputs - Complex processing, complex data Web Geoprocessing works well in practice WPS or REST, it doesn’t matter - although simplicity helps
