4 Abstrak Writing in the foreign language is assumed to be more difficult than it is in the native one. It is one of the major problems faced by most junior high school students since it is different from their first language, Indonesian. The objective of this study is to describe the ninth grade students of SMP 14 Pekalongan mastery in creating written recount text. In this study, the samples were 30 students which taken randomly in every class. The components that I analyzed to measure the students mastery in writing recount text were generic structure, linguistic features, grammar, vocabulary, coherence, cohesion and unity. Here, qualitative method is used to analyze the research findings. After analyzing the data, it can be concluded that all the students can create recount text based on the generic structure of recount text, the linguistic features, and the coherence, cohesion and unity, but in grammar in vocabulary mastery, there are 11 students (36.7 %) who got 5, 16 students (53.3 %) who got 3, 2 students (6.7 %) who got 2, and 1 student (3.3 %) who got 1 in the grammar score, and 19 students (63.3 %) who got 5, 8 students (26.7 %) who got 4, 2 students (6.7 %) who got 3, and 1 students (3.3 %) who got 2 in vocabulary score. It means that most of them are still lack of ability in grammar and vocabulary mastery. To improve the quality and to get better result in teaching written recount text, it is suggested that teachers should give more attention in grammar subject. They can give special time to the students just to teach grammar, and lack of vocabulary mastery can be handled by drilling the students to remember and to use words or new words in their daily life and classroom activities. Furthermore, teacher should be more creative in teaching recount texts to avoid the presence of students’ boredom.
