April 18 - 24, 2010 “If the watchman sees the sword coming and does not blow the trumpet to warn the people and the sword comes and takes the life of one of them, that man will be taken away because of his sin, but I will hold the watchman accountable for his blood.” (Ezekiel 33:6, New International Version) Weekly World Watch Andy Walton’s To skip the introductory slides and go straight to this weeks developments click here.
What is a Weekly World Watch? Israel: The continuing conflict in the Middle East and focus on Jerusalem. Europe: Its developing union, both political and religious. Russia: Its return to anti-Western ways as Bible prophecy’s “king of the north.” The UK and the US: Bible prophecy’s “king of the south.” Moral standards in decline and violence on the increase. WWW presentations in PowerPoint can be ordered as audio/visual CDs by clicking here. Move your mouse to place the cursor on the blue link and click.clicking here The idea is simple. It is to look at current events and compare them to events spoken of in the Bible.. I hope to build up a picture of God’s hand working in the affairs of this world. God is bringing about a day when all nations will be gathered to Jerusalem to battle. At that time God will send His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, back to this earth. Jesus will then establish God’s kingdom on earth. This kingdom will last for ever. This is our hope and the reason we watch. Increasing natural disasters: including earthquake, famine etc The following six themes will appear repeatedly in WWW:
HEADLINE EVENT COMMENT News Photo The source of the headline and the date are included. Each WWW looks at a few key developments that have happened during the past week. It is in no way meant to be exhaustive – just a look at those events I saw as significant from a Biblical point of view. What is in a Weekly World Watch? BIBLE QUOTE This is normally one verse which backs up why the event that has occurred is interesting from a Biblical perspective. Please read in its context. Unless stated otherwise, all quotes are from the King James Version. (Book, chapter, and verse) This is straight from a news report that caught my eye because it looked significant from a Biblical perspective, usually that of prophecy. Every WWW event slide has the following format. To reveal each block of text just left click your mouse or press the space bar. You control when it appears. This is the reporter’s description of the event. It is always a direct quotation from the news report and reflects the understanding of the reporter and editors. This is my comment on why the event is interesting to a Bible student. The intention of the WWW is to offer brief Biblical perspectives without going into detail. Netanyahu defies Obama's demands over Jerusalem Benjamin Netanyahu, the Israeli prime minister, has formally defied a US call to halt Jewish construction in East Jerusalem, according to officials in Washington. Mr Netanyahu is said to have written to Barack Obama over the weekend officially rejecting his demand to freeze settlement expansion in the city – a move that takes relations between Israel and its superpower patron into uncharted territory. The Israeli prime minister's response came nearly a month after a tempestuous meeting at the White House in which he was instructed to make a series of confidence-building measures towards the Palestinian leadership. Until now, Mr Netanyahu has equivocated as he tried to balance the demands of his coalition's right-wing, which urged him to make no compromises, against the intense pressure of the US president. Although he offered to make some concessions, such as releasing a number of Palestinian prisoners, Mr Netanyahu held firm on the issue of East Jerusalem, which Israel captured and annexed after the Six-Day War of 1967. Daily Telegraph, April 22, 2010 EVENT COMMENT For I will gather all nations against Jerusalem to battle; and the city shall be taken, and the houses rifled, and the women ravished; and half of the city shall go forth into captivity, and the residue of the people shall not be cut off from the city.. BIBLE QUOTE Mr Netanyahu has made his feelings on East Jerusalem clear in recent days. Stopping construction in the city's Jewish settlements is "totally, totally a non-starter", he told the US television network ABC on Sunday. Obama made clear last week that an Arab-Israeli peace settlement was vital for the security interests of the United States. America will not let this rest. Jerusalem has become the issue for America. Jerusalem has become the issue for Israel. Jerusalem has become the issue for the Palestinians. One day soon Jerusalem will become the issue for the whole world as conflict begins over this city as foretold. (Zechariah 14:2)
US warns Syria over Scuds-to-Hezbollah claim A top US official has warned of serious repercussions for Syria if claims that it supplied the Lebanese Islamist group Hezbollah with Scud missiles are true. Assistant Secretary of State Jeffrey Feltman said "all options are going to be on the table looking at this". But he declined to say whether the US could confirm a transfer had occurred. Earlier, Lebanon's prime minister dismissed the accusation, first made by Israel, saying it seemed an attempt to find a pretext for a military strike. "Threats that Lebanon now has huge missiles are similar to what they used to say about weapons of mass destruction in Iraq," Saad Hariri said. "Israel is trying to reproduce the same scenario for Lebanon." BBConline, April 22, 2010 EVENT COMMENT The earth mourneth and languisheth: Lebanon is ashamed and hewn down: Sharon is like a wilderness; and Bashan and Carmel shake off their fruits. Now will I rise, saith the LORD; now will I be exalted; now will I lift up myself. BIBLE QUOTE (Isaiah 33:9-10) We reported in last weeks WWW about the possibility that Syria has supplied scud missiles to Hezbollah in Lebanon. It was only reported in Debkafile last week, however, this week America has made statements about these accusations. Syria has been threatened with serious consequences if the delivery of scud missiles is true. Washington fears a transfer of more sophisticated missile technology to Hezbollah would increase the likelihood of another bloody conflict between Israel and Syria. The Bible tells us that Lebanon will end up being “hewn down”. This will happen when the “earth mourns and languishes.” When Lebanon is “hewn down” this is the time that the LORD will “rise” and be “exalted”. It is quite possible that when Lebanon is destroyed - Syria will be as well. See Isaiah 17. This chapter tells us that Jacob will wax thin at this time. Or in our language – Israel will be weakened. It is when Israel is in a weakened state that Christ will return to save the remnant left. God will then be exalted!
Iran begins war games in Persian Gulf oil route Iran's elite Revolutionary Guard held war games Thursday in the strategic Persian Gulf oil route, the Hormuz Strait, a show of its military strength at a time when the country's leaders are depicting President Barack Obama's new nuclear policy as a threat. Ahead of the military manoeuvres, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei accused Washington of trying to dominate the world through its nuclear arsenal and vowed that Iran would not bend before what he called "implicit atomic threats." Khamenei was referring to Obama's announcement earlier this month of a new nuclear strategy that focuses less on Cold War threats and more on preventing the spread of weapons. As part of the new guidelines, Washington vowed not to use its arsenal against nations that don't have their own nuclear weapons, with the exception of countries that are not abiding by international non-proliferation rules - a caveat the administration said meant Iran and North Korea. Associated Press, April 22, 2010 EVENT COMMENT 1 The burden of Babylon [Iraq], which Isaiah the son of Amoz did see. 4 a tumultuous noise of the kingdoms of nations gathered together. 6 Howl ye; for the day of the LORD is at hand 11 I will punish the world for their evil 13 Behold, I will stir up the Medes [Iranians] against them, BIBLE QUOTE (Isaiah 13:1,4,6,11,13) The tension between Iran and America continues and deepens. The war games called “Great Prophet 5” are being conducted by Iran in the Strait of Hormuz. The Strait of Hormuz is a transit route for about 20% of the world's daily oil supply. It is the relatively narrow passageway between Iran and Oman that connects the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman. Some analysts are concerned that these war games could quickly escalate if there is any provocation to shipping in the area. Iran is mentioned in the Bible as Persia and also the Medes. Isaiah 13 talks of the Medes being “stirred up”. The WWW has tracked this “stirring up” of the Medes since the 2003 war in Iraq. Isaiah 13 also speaks of nations coming against Babylon (Iraq).
Fears that war between Israel & Hezbollah is 'imminent' King Abdullah of Jordan has warned the US that there were fears in Lebanon that a war between Israel and Hezbollah was “imminent” amid high tensions in the region. The king, in Washington for President Barack Obama's nuclear summit, gave his warning after Israel claimed that Syria had handed over Scud missiles in its armoury to the Lebanon-based Hezbollah. His comments, which were made to private meeting of the US Congressional Friends of Jordan caucus were said to be "sobering". An aide to Benjamin Netanyahu, the Israeli prime minister, said that the pace of Hezbollah's re-armament and Syria's role in it was causing growing alarm in the Jewish state. "We are very conscious of the build-up of Hezbollah's military machine," the aide said. "We have unfortunately seen new types and greater quality of missiles. The Syrian role in passing those weapons to Hezbollah is ongoing and is dangerous." Daily Telegraph, April 15, 2010 EVENT COMMENT Damascus is waxed feeble, and turneth herself to flee, and fear hath seized on her: anguish and sorrows have taken her, as a woman in travail. BIBLE QUOTE (Jeremiah 49:24) When war finally begins we cannot say we had no idea it was about to start. The warnings have been there for weeks (if not months) that conflict is coming. This war about to take place, will (perhaps in the very short term) see Israel succeed in defeating Lebanon and Syria - but at an enormous cost. Israel will be left severely weakened. Isaiah 17:4 makes absolutely clear that Jacob (Israel) is weakened by this war. “in that day it shall come to pass, that the glory of Jacob shall be made thin”. But this initial phase of the final conflict is only a phase. For after the war between Israel and Syria we will then see Russia, Iran, the nations of northern Africa and many others join forces and invade Israel. This is the main reason for Syria not being mentioned in Ezekiel 38. Syria is “destroyed” at the point Gog (Russia) invades.
Russia's Black Sea Fleet to stay in Ukraine until 2042 The Kremlin has scored a major diplomatic victory, striking a deal that will allow Russia's Black Sea Fleet to stay in Ukraine for another thirty years, more than a quarter of a century after it was supposed to leave. Russia capitalised on its growing soft power and substantial energy reserves to clinch the deal, agreeing to give Ukraine multi-billion dollar discounts to the price it pays for Russian natural gas in return. The deal is controversial in the extreme and means that the Russian fleet will no longer have to abandon its famous base in the city of Sevastopol in Crimea in 2017 as originally planned. Instead, it can remain until 2042 with a possible option to stay on until 2047. The deal marks a dramatic reversal of Russia's fortunes in Ukraine. The previous Ukrainian president, Viktor Yushchenko, was a fierce opponent of the Russian fleet's continued presence regarding it as a hostile force that was preventing his country from joining both the EU and Nato. Daily Telegraph, April 21, 2010 EVENT COMMENT Son of man, set thy face against Gog, of the land of Magog, the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal, and prophesy against him, And say, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I am against thee, O Gog Analysts said that this move buries the Ukraine's chances of joining Nato for four decades. Dmitry Medvedev, the Russian president, savoured the moment, revelling in a diplomatic victory that is certain to bolster Russia's geopolitical influence in the former Soviet Union in the face of what it sees as growing encroachment by Nato and the United States. The Ukraine is an interesting land. It is where the Scythians once lived. Josephus (ancient historian) tells us that the Scythians are in fact the Magogites. They lived along the northern shores of the Black Sea and inland for about 200 miles. Gog is of the land of Magog we are told in Ezekiel 38. We see Russia based in this land as foretold. BIBLE QUOTE (Ezekiel 38:2,3)
As volcanic eruptions go, Iceland's Eyjafjallajokull won't break the records. Icelanders dismiss the normally sleepy Eyjafjallajokull as a "weary old man," and in fact few people outside the volcanology community noticed when the volcano began spewing lava on March 20. But that's not quite what happened. Instead, on April 14, a new and stronger eruption on Eyjafjallajokull exploded through a glacial ice cap, throwing a vast plume of volcanic ash around 7 miles (11 km) into the atmosphere, high enough to be carried for thousands of miles. And then, as if on cue, the winds shifted, blowing to the east and south, sending the tower of ash toward northern Europe and some of the most crowded airspace on the planet. "It was an eruption at the right place at the right time," says Marcus Bursik, a volcanologist at the University at Buffalo. "Or, I guess, really, the other way around." As the cloud metastasized across the continent, nervous bureaucrats kept much of its airspace closed for almost five days, resulting in the cancellation of more than 100,000 flights and the stranding of hundreds of thousands of travellers in airports around the world. With a third of the industry down, it was the worst global travel disruption since World War II. Time Magazine, April 24, 2010 EVENT COMMENT And the LORD brought us forth out of Egypt with a mighty hand, and with an outstretched arm, and with great terribleness, and with signs, and with wonders: We have been rescued from Egypt (the world) and can see around us the mighty hand of God. BIBLE QUOTE (Deuteronomy 26:8) The impact of this “small” eruption went far beyond the stranded travellers. The airline industry lost about $2 billion. Kenyan famers lost $2 million a day. Britain’s government met in crisis meetings and the election campaign in the UK was almost put on hold. It may even have an impact on the elections as opposition parties accused the government of incompetence in handling the crisis. Insurance companies called this an “act of God”. Of course they are right. This insignificant volcano brought disarray to our ordered lives. It is warning to us all… to trust in God NOT in man. The cloud that closed a continent
