PLANT OF THE MONTH CANNAS

ORIGINS THE CANNA ( OR CANNA LILY, IS NOT A TRUE LILY) IS A GENUS OF 19 SPECIES OF FLOWERING PLANTS, CANNA IS THE ONLY GENUS IN THE FAMILY CANNACEAE. THE CLOSEST RELATIVES TO THE CANNA ARE GINGERS AND BANANAS. THEY HAVE NATURALISED ALL OVER THE WORLD AND ARE EVEN GROWN CLOSE TO THE ARCTIC CIRCLE IN SUMMER THEY ORIGINATE FROM THE SOUTHERN STATES OF THE USA,CENTRAL AND SOUTH AMERICA.ALL SPECIES ARE SAID TO ORIGINATE FROM THESE REGIONS.

TYPES OF CANNAS THERE ARE DWARF VARIETIES THAT ONLY GROW TO ABOUT 2 FEET TALL THE NORMAL CULTIVARS CAN GROW UP TO 6 FEET TALL. THERE ARE ALSO WATER CANNAS THAT WILL GROW AROUND THE EDGES OF PONDS AND IN VERY WET AREAS.THEY WILL GROW IN WATER NO MORE THAN 6- 8INCHES DEEP. THE CANNA IS ALSO ONE OF THE WORLDS RICHEST STARCH SOURCES AND IS AN AGRICULTURAL PLANT. THEY STILL GROW IN THE WILD SO SUCCESSFULLY THAT THEY CAN BECOME INVASIVE AND CAN GROW UP TO ALMOST 10 FEET TALL. THEY ARE GROWN FROM PERRENIAL RHIZOMES,BUT IN WARMER CLIMATES ARE GROWN AS ANNUALS.

DESCRIPTION THEY HAVE BEAUTIFUL SHOWY FLOWERS IN A HUGE RANGE OF COLOURS FROM PINK TO REDS AND YELLOWS ALSO MULTI-COLOURS HAVE BEEN BRED, THEY HAVE LARGE STRIKING LEAVES THAT CAN BE GREEN,RED,PURPLE AND VARIGATED AND MAKE THE PLANT BEAUTIFUL EVEN WHEN NOT IN FLOWER THEY LOOK STUNNING IN LARGE CLUMPS,BUT LOOK JUST AS ATTRACTIVE AS A SPECIMEN PLANT. ALL IN ALL THEY ARE A VERY ATTRACTIVE PLANT FOR ANY GARDEN, AND LOOK STUNNING IN POTS.

A VERY USEFUL PLANT NOT ONLY IS IT A VERY DECORATIVE PLANT IT HAS A HUGE RANGE OF OTHER USES. INTERNATIONALLY,CANNAS ARE ONE OF THE MOST POPULAR GARDEN PLANTS AND A LARGE HORTICULTURAL INDUSTRY DEPENDS ON THE PLANT. THE RHIZOMES OF CANNAS ARE RICH IN STARCH,AND IT HAS MANY USES IN AGRICULTURE.ALL OF THE PLANT HAS COMMERCIAL VALUE,RHIZOMES FOR STARCH,(CONSUMPTION BY HUMANS AND LIVESTOCK),STEMS AND FOILAGE FOR ANIMAL FODDER, YOUNG SHOOTS AS A VEGETABLE,AND YOUNG SEEDS AS AN ADDITION TO TORTILLAS. THE SEEDS ARE USED AS BEADS IN JEWELERY. THE SEEDS ARE MOBILE ELEMENTS OF THE KAYAMB,A MUSICAL INSTRUMENT FROM REUNION AS WELL AS THE HOSHO,A GOURD RATTLE FROM ZIMBABWE WHERE THE SEED IS KNOWN AS HOTA SEEDS. IN MORE REMOTE REGIONS OF INDIA CANNAS ARE FERMENTED TO PRODUCE ALCHOL. THE PLANT YIELDS A FIBRE FROM THE STEM WHICH IS USED AS A JUTE SUBSTITUTE.

MORE USES A FIBRE OBTAINED FROM THE LEAVES IS USED FOR MAKING PAPER. THE LEAVES ARE HARVESTED IN THE LATE SUMMER AFTER THE PLANT HAS FLOWERED,THEY ARE SCRAPED TO REMOVE THE OUTER SKIN,AND ARE THEN SOAKED IN WATER FOR 2 HOURS PRIOR TO COOKING.THE FIBRES ARE COOKED FOR 24 HOURS WITH LYE AND THEN BEATEN IN A BLENDER.THEY MAKE A LIGHT TAN BROWN PAPER. A PURPLE DYE IS OBTAINED FROM THE SEEDS. SMOKE FROM THE BURNING LEAVES IS SAID TO BE AN INSECTICIDAL. IN THAILAND CANNAS ARE A TRADITIONAL GIFT FOR FATHERS DAY. CANNAS ARE USED TO EXTRACT UNDESIRABLE POLLUTANTS IN A WETLAND ENVIROMENT AS THEY HAVE A HIGH TOLERANCE TO CONTAMINANTS. IN VIETNAM CANNA STARCH IS USED TO MAKE CELLOPHANE NOODLES KNOWN AS MIEN DONG.

PLANTING THEY NEED TO BE PLANTED IN FULL SUN EVEN IN SPAIN. THEY LIKE A FERTILE MOIST SOIL. TO PLANT LOOSEN THE SOIL TO A DEPTH OF 12 TO 15 INCHES THEN MIX IN A 2 TO 4 INCH LAYER OF GOOD COMPOST. DIG A HOLE 2 TO 3 INCHES DEEP AND SET THE RHIZOME IN THE HOLE EYES UP. COVER WITH SOIL AND TAMP IN FIRMLY. WATER THOROUGHLY. SPACE RHIZOMES 1-4 FEET APART. IT IS NOT RECOMMENDED TO GROW FROM SEED CAN BE SLOW AND TRICKY, BEST LEFT TO THE EXPERTS.

CARE CANNAS DO BEST WITH A GOOD SUPPLY OF WATER, SO WATER WELL IF THE RAINFALL IS LESS THAN 1 INCH A WEEK. WATER FREELY IN A DRY SPELL.(ALL YEAR!) KEEP A THIN LAYER OF MULCH AROUND THE PLANTS TO HELP RETAIN MOISTURE STAKE TALL VARIETIES IF NEEDED. AS FLOWERS FADE, DEADHEAD TO PROMOTE CONTINUED FLOWERING. WHEN A FLOWER SPIKE HAS NO MORE BUDS, PRUNE IT DOWN TO THE NEXT SIDE SHOOT WHERE A SECONDRY FLOWER SPIKE SHOULD DEVELOP, WHEN THIS IS ALSO FINISHED CUT THE FLOWER STEM DOWN TO THE GROUND. HERE YOU CAN LET THEM GROW WITHOUT MOVING THEM UNTIL THE CLUMPS GROW VERY MATTED. EVERY 3 TO 4 YEARS IN WINTER, DIG UP THE CLUMPS,SEPARATE THE ROOTS,AND PLANT THEM UP IN ENRICHED SOIL. IN VERY COLD AREAS THEY MAY HAVE TO BE LIFTED AND SRORED OVER WINTER. APPLYING A LIQUID FERTILISER MID- SUMMER SHOULD BE SUFFICIENT AS CANNAS DO NOT NEED TO BE PAMPERED

PESTS AND DISEASES CANNAS ARE LARGELY FREE OF PESTS. SLUGS & SNAILS ARE FOND OF THE YOUNG LEAVES IN VERY HOT DRY WEATHER RED SPIDER MITE CAN BE A PROBLEM BUT MORE OF A PROBLEM INDOORS. ALSO CATTERPILLARS CAN EAT THE LEAVES AND FLOWERS FUNGAL LEAF SPOT CAN OCCUR AS CAN BACTERIAL BLIGHT.

SUMMARY ALL IN ALL THEY ARE VERY EASY PLANTS TO GROW SO LONG AS YOU GIVE THEM FERTILE SOIL, AMPLE WATER AND SUN THEN LEAVE THEM ALONE TO SPREAD. RHIZOMES ARE CHEAP TO BUY AND THEY WILL GIVE YOU YEARS OF PLEASURE. WHAT MORE COULD YOU ASK. GET YOUR CANNAS NOW !
