2 D ISASSEMBLY P ROCESS S TEPS 1. A CD-ROM DRIVE WAS CHOSEN BY THE TEAM AS THE ELECTRONIC DEVICE TO BE DISASSEMBLED. 2. T HE N ECESSARY TOOLS WERE OBTAINED (3 SMALL P HILLIPS HEAD SCREWDRIVERS, 1 MULTI - TOOL W / FLATHEAD SCREWDRIVER & A SMALL PAIR OF LONG NOSED PLIERS ) FOR TAKING APART CD-R OM DRIVE. 3. 4 SMALL SILVER METAL SCREWS WERE REMOVED FROM METAL BOTTOM PLATE. 4. O UTER CASING WAS SEPARATED FROM DEVICE. 5. T OP CASING OF DEVICE WAS PRIED OFF USING A FLAT HEAD SCREWDRIVER FROM MULTI - TOOL. 6. P LASTIC FACEPLATE WAS PRIED OFF WITH THE SAME METHOD AS PREVIOUS STEP.

3 D ISASSEMBLY P ROCESS S TEPS 7. 4 S MALLER BLACK METAL SCREWS WERE REMOVED FROM A RECTANGULAR DULL SILVER METAL PLATE (CD READER ) CONTAINING THE LASER COMPONENTS. 8. T HE CD READER PLATE WAS SEPARATED FROM THE DEVICE. 9. T HE CD READER PLATE CONTAINED ONE SMALL SILVER SCREW THAT WOULD NOT LOOSEN. S CREW WAS PRIED OFF USING A LARGER FLAT HEAD SCREWDRIVER. 10. 4 VERY SMALL METAL SCREWS WERE REMOVED FROM COMPONENT FOR FURTHER DISASSEMBLY. 11. T HE CIRCUIT BOARD WAS SEPARATED FROM CD-D RIVE WITH FLAT HEAD SCREWDRIVER. 12. T HE CIRCUIT BOARD WAS DISASSEMBLED INTO 2 SECTIONS. 13. T HE SMALLER C IRCUIT BOARD SECTION CONTAINS A SMALL MOTOR. M OTOR WAS REMOVED BY FLIPPING OVER THE SECTION AND DISCONNECTING A PLUG & WIRE FROM A 2- PRONGED CONNECTOR.

5 D ISASSEMBLY P ROCESS S TEPS 14.T HE VOLUME DIAL & HEADPHONE JACK ON THE SMALLER SECTION WERE ATTACHED WITH A GLUE AND RIVET METHOD SO THESE WERE NOT REMOVED. 15.T HE INFORMATION TAPE CONNECTING THE CIRCUIT BOARD SECTIONS TOGETHER WAS DETACHED WITH A SLIGHT TUG. 16.T HE PLASTIC CASE OF THE DEVICE WAS FURTHER DISASSEMBLED INTO 2 SMALLER SECTIONS. 17.O NE SECTION CONTAINED A SMALL BLACK REMOVABLE PLASTIC CD TRAY HOLDER THAT WAS EASILY LIFTED OUT BY PRYING THE SIDES WITH THE FLATHEAD SCREWDRIVER. 18.T HE FRONT OF THIS PLASTIC TRAY CONTAINED A THIN BLACK RUBBER BAND AND GEAR PULLEY MECHANISM. T HE 2 PLASTIC GEARS WERE PERMANENTLY ATTACHED TO THE TRAY BUT THE BAND WAS SEPARATED FROM THE PULLEY. 19.I NVENTORY OF PARTS WAS PERFORMED WHILE TOXICITY / HEALTH RISK ISSUES WERE ASSESSED & RESEARCHED VIA INTERNET. 20.D ISASSEMBLED COMPONENTS AND SURROUNDING WORK AREA WAS CLEANED.

6 Component List 1.1 metal bottom plate 2. 1 metal top plate (Held in by 4 small silver screws) 3. 1 plastic CD tray 4. 1 plastic CD tray frame 5. 1 plastic front face frame 6. 1 black plastic tray guide 7. 1 white plastic gear 8. 1 black rubber band 9. 1 metal rectangular plate (for holding top of disc in place) 10. 1 circuit board w/ microchips (includes small detachable motor with female connector) 11. 1 metal screw to hold CD reader (4 small metal screws with 4 rubber stoppers) 12. 2 small silver metal rods to hold CD reader/writer head 13. 1 laser eye (held by 8 small black metal screws) 14. 1 black cylindrical rotating CD holder 15. 2 small copper brackets (held in by 2 small silver screws) 16. 1 larger white plastic laser eye component 17. 1 small motor attached to a positioning sensor and brass calibrating rod

10  S HARP EDGES ON METAL BOTTOM PLATE & CIRCUIT BOARD COULD CAUSE MINOR CUTS IF PROPER CARE IS NOT TAKEN.  O THER THAN SHARP CORNERS, DEVICE IS NOT HAZARDOUS TO TOUCH.  S EVERAL INTERNET SEARCHES PROVED INCONCLUSIVE REGARDING HARMFUL CHEMICALS IN PLASTIC PARTS, CIRCUITS, SOLDER, WIRES, METALS, OR GEAR LUBRICANTS.  T OXIC ISSUES ARE CURRENTLY NON - EXISTENT WITH THIS DEVICE DUE TO POOR WEB DOCUMENTATION OF INDIVIDUAL COMPONENTS ’ CHEMICAL COMPOSITION. D ISASSEMBLY R ISK A SSESSMENT !
