Thinking Direction Qustionnaire, Management of Technological Innovation, KV Patri 1 What is your natural thinking direction or decision making style? Answer the following questionnaire to find out. [G. Petty, How to be Better at Creativity, The Industrial Society, Kogan Page Ltd., London, HD53.P47]

Thinking Direction Qustionnaire, Management of Technological Innovation, KV Patri 2 There are twenty statements divided into four different sections: J, S, A and I. Think about your approach to creative work and put a tick in only one of the columns: Yes!!, Yes, No, and No!!Be honest, this is not a time for false modesty. Don't agonize; if in doubt follow your gut feelings. After completing each section, score your responses according to the scheme: Yes!! = 2, Yes = 1, No = 0, and No!! = -1. Record your total score for the section. The maximum possible score for each section is 10. Do not assume that a high or low score is “good”. Note the sections with the highest and lowest scores.

I carefully balance the pros and cons of different courses of action:YES!!, YES, NO or NO!! 2. When I get a good idea I look for possible difficulties or for methods of improving it: YES!!, YES, NO or NO!! 3. I look for strengths or weaknesses in almost everything I do: YES!!, YES, NO or NO!! 4. I think that on the whole I have sound judgement or taste about my work: YES!!, YES, NO or NO!! 5. I am often critical but give credit where it's due: YES!!, YES, NO or NO!!

8 J: Judge If this is your highest score you are critically aware of most of what you do and probably have reasonable judgement. You are very aware of the likely consequences of action and important detail does not usually escape you. If your score is very high, beware of over-caution. You might be over-critical and a perfectionist, to the point of inhibiting your Activist score. There should be a balance between appreciation and constructive criticism of what you do. Destructive criticism is counter-productive, unless you can take it in a genuinely good-humored way. If this is your lowest score you may be overconfident and too intuitive. You could probably improve your work a good deal if you were more judgmental about draft work.

Thinking Direction Qustionnaire, Management of Technological Innovation, KV Patri 9 S: Strategist (finding reasons by upward thinking) If this is your highest score you are unusual and you have a clear sense of purpose in almost everything you do. You are able to see the big picture without getting lost in the detail. If your score is very high, beware the head in the clouds syndrome, that is ignoring practical constraints and important detail, or failing to take action. If this is your lowest score you risk doing the wrong thing, though perhaps doing it very well! Your work would be more I focused and well directed if you paid more attention to the clarification process. Make lots of use of the clarification questions at the start of this chapter and remember to step up more frequently.

Thinking Direction Qustionnaire, Management of Technological Innovation, KV Patri 10 A: Activist (specifying actions by downward thinking). If this is your highest score you are active and enthusiastic, probably with a good fund of self-confidence (even if it doesn't feel like that all the time). You are probably prepared to experiment and have plenty of commitment. However, you may be just a victim of downsizing. If your score is very high there is considerable danger that you will rush into action before (i) exploring the problem fully (Have you fitted any good lift shafts recently?), or (ii) a planning properly-to fail to plan is to plan to fail.

Thinking Direction Qustionnaire, Management of Technological Innovation, KV Patri 11 You may also fixate on tactical objectives (means) and so lose sight of what you are really truing to achieve by these objectives (ends). The more difficulty you experience, and the more overworked you are, the more likely this is to be a problem. This is the wasp at the window syndrome; if the wasp can’t get through the window it just tries harder, instead of looking for another means to the same end. If A has your lowest score you lack the ability to apply yourself, but why? You might be too self- critical and cautious to get the best out of your talents. If so, don’t be afraid of producing poor work and it is the way to learn. Stop blaming yourself for anything less than perfection, loosen up and try to enjoy your work more.

Thinking Direction Qustionnaire, Management of Technological Innovation, KV Patri 12 I: Innovator (looking for alternatives by sideways thinking) If this is your highest score you are a very rare bird, inventive and original. If your score is very high beware of being over-optimistic or impractical. You are also prone to ‘reinventing the wheel’, and the ‘not invented here’ syndromes. If this is your lowest score you are either too modest or you are rushing into action without examining alternative possibilities. The latter is a very common fault and perhaps everyone has it some degree. So look for alternatives with OR? ….UNLESS?…and NO!….
