After the invention of the integrated circuit, the next step was to reduce the overall size. LSI could fit a lot of components onto one chip. In the 1980’s VLSI could fit hundreds of thousands of components onto one chip. ULSI could increase those numbers by millions on one single chip. This also increased their power, their efficiency and reliability.
