Doctrine and Covenants 124:39 The purposes for the temple throughout the ages.
Doctrine and Covenants 124:39 Therefore, verily I say unto you, that your anointings, and your washings, and your baptisms for the dead, and your solemn assemblies, and your memorials for your sacrifices by the sons of Levi, and for your oracles in your most holy places wherein you receive conversations, and your statutes and judgments, for the beginning of the revelations and foundation of Zion, and for the glory, honor, and endowment of all her municipals, are ordained by the ordinance of my holy house, which my people are always commanded to build unto my holy name.anointingsbaptismssolemnmemorialssacrifices oracles
Anointing – Bible Dictionary Anciently anointing was done for reasons both secular and sacred. It is a sign of hospitality in Luke 7: 46, and of routine personal grooming in 2 Sam. 12: 20 and Matt. 6: 17.Luke 7: 462 Sam. 12: 20Matt. 6: 17 Kings were anointed to their office by the prophets (1 Sam. 10: 1; 1 Sam. 16: 13; 2 Sam. 5: 3; 1 Kgs. 1: 39; 1 Kgs. 19: 16; 2 Kgs. 9: 3, 6; 2 Kgs. 11: 12; 1 Chr. 11: 3; 1 Chr. 29: 22; 2 Chr. 23: 11). The anointing of the priests is outlined in Ex. 40: 15; of the high priest (Aaronic order) in Lev. 21: 10.1 Sam. 10: 11 Sam. 16: 132 Sam. 5: 31 Kgs. 1: 391 Kgs. 19: 162 Kgs. 9: 3, 62 Kgs. 11: 121 Chr. 11: 31 Chr. 29: 222 Chr. 23: 11Ex. 40: 15Lev. 21: 10 The holy anointing oil used in the law of Moses was composed of olive oil mixed with spices and was to be restricted in use to certain specified ceremonies (Ex. 30: 22- 33; Ex. 37: 29). In the Church today holy consecrated olive oil is used in anointing persons in various sacred ceremonies, including administration to the sick.Ex. 30: 22- 33Ex. 37: 29 Although the scriptures do not specifically so state, we may confidently assume that anointing with oil has been part of true, revealed religion ever since the gospel was first introduced on this earth to Adam.
Washing and Anointing “The ordinances of washing and anointing are referred to often in the temple as initiatory ordinances. It will be sufficient for our purposes to say only the following: Associated with the endowment are washings and anointings—mostly symbolic in nature, but promising definite, immediate blessings as well as future blessings.” - Boyd K. Packer – The Holy Temple 154-155
Baptism – Bible Dictionary Baptism is not optional if one wishes the fullness of salvation. Baptism in water has several purposes. It is for the remission of sins, for membership in the Church, and for entrance into the celestial kingdom; it is also the doorway to personal sanctification when followed by the reception of the Holy Ghost.
Solemn Assemblies “In ancient Israel, these assemblies were held in connection with feasts, sacrifices, and the dedication of Solomon’s Temple. On these solemn occasions, Israel gathered and came before the Lord in a state of ritual holiness.” “Some solemn assemblies are held in temples, some in the Tabernacle, and others in stake centers. Whatever the purpose or location of the assembly, the sacredness of the event is paramount.”
Solemn Assemblies continued In modern times, solemn assemblies are called for these occasions: “When the membership of the Church sustains a new prophet of the Lord.” “Each…temple dedication.” “On 2 July 1889, a special solemn assembly was held in the Salt Lake Temple in which President Lorenzo Snow presented the law of tithing as the word and will of God for members of the Church to accept.” “Other solemn assemblies have been called by the First Presidency to instruct priesthood leaders and returned missionaries.” Robert J. Norman, director of the Tucson LDS Institute of Religion adjacent to the University of Arizona – Ensign Dec. 1988
Memorials Ex. 13: 9. And it shall be for a sign unto thee upon thine hand, and for a memorial between thine eyes, that the Lord’s law may be in thy mouth: Ex. 13: 9signmemorial Phylacteries and frontlets – Exodus 13:16 and Deuteronomy 6:8 A possible interpretation of this in our day could be wearing garments or taking the sacrament.
Sacrifices “Sacrifices were thus instructive as well as worshipful. They were accompanied by prayer, devotion, and dedication, and represented an acknowledgment on the part of the individual of his duty toward God, and also a thankfulness to the Lord for his life and blessings upon the earth.” – Bible Dictonary “Latter-day Saints believe that the law of sacrifice is an important element of their lives. Because the great sacrifice of the Son of God ended sacrifice by the shedding of blood, today we live the law of sacrifice in other ways.” A Broken Heart and a Contrite Spirit - Tribulation Tithes- Missionary work Obedience- Example By Elder Monte J. Brough Of the Seventy
Oracles Revelations from the Lord – footnote D&C 90:4a D&C 90: 4-5. Nevertheless, through you (Joseph Smith) shall the oracles be given to another, yea, even unto the church. And all they who receive the oracles of God, let them beware how they hold them lest they are accounted as a light thing, and are brought under condemnation thereby, and stumble and fall when the storms descend, and the winds blow…D&C 90: 4oracles Two other types of oracles – The scriptures and holy places (such as the Temple) where we can receive revelation.
Ordinance – True to the Faith In the Church, an ordinance is a sacred, formal act performed by the authority of the priesthood. Some ordinances are essential to our exaltation. These ordinances are called saving ordinances. They include baptism, confirmation, ordination to the Melchizedek Priesthood (for men), the temple endowment, and the marriage sealing. With each of these ordinances, we enter into solemn covenants with the Lord. Other ordinances, such as naming and blessing children, consecrating oil, and administering to the sick and afflicted, are also performed by priesthood authority. While they are not essential to our salvation, they are important for our comfort, guidance, and encouragement. Ordinances and covenants help us remember who we are. They remind us of our duty to God. The Lord has provided them to help us come unto Him and receive eternal life. When we honor them, He strengthens us.
Municipals – Merriam-Webster 1 : of or relating to the internal affairs of a major political unit (as a nation) 2 : having local self-government 3 : restricted to one locality Zion – God’s people
