4 Instructional Time  10 minutes vocabulary instruction per day  Replace current “Amazing Words” instructional time  Carve out the time from the literacy block Robust Vocabulary Words  3-4 Tier II words every two weeks Robust Vocabulary Instruction

5 Choosing a Read Aloud  Reading Street read alouds  Choose 3 read alouds from each unit (follow pacing guide)  Spend 2 weeks on each read aloud  Choosing 3-4 Robust Vocabulary Words  Reading Street Amazing Words  Select 3-4 words that students will learn to MASTERY! Robust Vocabulary Instruction

6 Word Masters  Week 1: Monday-Tuesday  Fetzer Workbook, Grades K-1 Page 19  Explicitly Teach each Robust Vocabulary Word- 1. Provide student-friendly definition 2. Provide Total Physical Response (TPR) 3. Provide a simple drawing 4. Students practice saying/doing TPR for all words Robust Vocabulary Instruction

7 Creating a Movie Script  Week 1: Wednesday-Friday  Fetzer Workbook Grades K-1: Pages  Teams create a movie script using the 3-4 Words  “Movie Script: Homework Page” (Page 27)  Teacher-Created Movie Script Activity-  Draw Beginning – Middle – End (BME)  Add vocabulary words or labels (optional)  Students retell & act out numerous times Robust Vocabulary Instruction

8 Vocabulary Anchor Chart  Week 1/2: Friday or Monday  Fetzer Workbook Grades K-1: Pages  Vocabulary Anchor Charts – DO NOT Add to Existing Word Walls  Classroom Vocabulary Resource Activity- 1. Separate anchor charts: (nouns – verbs – adjectives) 2. Resource for student use during oral language and writing Robust Vocabulary Instruction

9 Practicing the Movie Script  Week 2: Monday – Wednesday  Fetzer Workbook Grades K-1: Pages  Practice 4-6 Times During the Day (“Line-Ups”)  Vocabulary Practice in Context Activity 1. Students retell & act out the movie script 2. Wording will change and be fluid 3. Robust Vocabulary is practiced in context of a story Robust Vocabulary Instruction

10 Homework  Week 2: Wednesday- Thursday  For Vocabulary Practice - Not for a Grade  Vocabulary Practice in Context Activity- 1. Retelling Movie Script to a parent 2. Parent listens for/checks off 3-4 words 3. Writing Movie Script: Optional Robust Vocabulary Instruction

11 Movie Script Collection  Week 2: Thursday - Friday  Review Past Robust Vocabulary  Vocabulary Practice in Context Activity- 1. Add week’s Movie Script to collection/class library 2. Practice past Robust Vocabulary in prior movie scripts Robust Vocabulary Instruction

12 Writing of Movie Script (Optional):  Week 2: Thursday - Friday  Practice Turning Oral Language into Written Language  Written Vocabulary Practice in Context Activity- 1. Students turn Movie Script into a written story 2. Use 3-4 Robust Vocabulary words 3. Stories will lack details of oral language Robust Vocabulary Instruction
