FINDING STUFF ON THE INTERNET TO HELP YOU STUDY MOON PHASES YOUTUBE CLIPS Tahoma Jr. High 8 th Grade Science Maple Valley, WA
So… you found this clip. Is it a good one to study? * show “Critical Thinking - Cartoon Moon Phases” video from video folder if this doesn’t work
Looked great – good graphics and they sounded very official. BUT… unfortunately, they got the phases going BACKWARDS! (this would work only for the Southern Hemisphere like Australia) And also using the word “rotates” wrong! Rotates is SPINNING “orbiting” (or revolving) means to go around something You have to be VERY CAREFUL ABOUT WHAT YOU FIND ON THE INTERNET !!
And now for #2 – what do you think? * show “Moon Phases Preschool Version” video from video folder (not available in youtube) Even though this was “awkward” with the kid and his southern accent – it was CORRECT !! Don’t pre-judge something – be a Critical Thinker!
And now for #3 – what do you think? * show “Hip Hop Moon Phases” video from video folder if this doesn’t work
Catchy music – and other than pronouncing the word “waning” incorrectly, it is correct as well. *they also do point out well how a HALF moon is for some reason called a QUARTER moon…why? If we call a fully lit moon a FULL moon, then why if only half is lit we call it a “quarter” moon?? BE VERY CAREFUL ABOUT WHAT YOU FIND ON THE INTERENT AND CHECK THE SOURCE AT LEAST ONCE WITH A RELIABLE SITE.
HOW ABOUT THIS ONE? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YdI1aDjWLlY * show “Music Moon Phases” video from video folder if this doesn’t work
Good graphics – but kid and lady’s accent a bit tough to follow (she is Lebanese and works for NASA). But… information is correct. *critical thinking: if the Moon one quarter around in its orbit is called First Quarter – then why when it’s half way around its orbit it’s not called “Half Moon” and called a “Full Moon”. She said because it’s “fully lit up” – but when at a quarter orbit, it’s now “half lit up” and should be called a “half moon” – not quarter moon. This naming system is NOT CONSISTENT and VERY CONFUSING! (some countries – as you saw in the PPT – do use a consistent naming process – but not in the U.S.) THIS WOULD BE THE ONE YOU SHOULD STUDY INSTEAD!! end show
