Ledger Lines Notes written above or below the staff are called ledger lines. Ledger lines are short lines use only when notes are written outside of the five lines. How many ledger line notes can you find?

Time Signature Time signatures tell you how many beats and what kind of notes per measure there are. The top number tells you how many beats per measure. The bottom tells you that the quarter note ( ) equals 1 beat.

Measures and Bar lines Beats divide the staff into measures.
Bar lines show the beginning and ending of each measure. What is the time signature? How many beats are in each measure? How many measures are there? How many bar lines are there?

Musical Notes Notes look different so that we can distinguish them. They have parts which makes them different: head, stem, flag, beam, and dots. Look at the note chart: Which notes have stems? Which notes have flags? Which note has just a head? What two notes are not colored in? Which note do you think equals 1 beat?
