HOME EXERCISE GAMES LINKS SEARCH ACTIVITIES What is length? Length is a distance from one point to another point The standard unit for length is cm. Let us look at the example below. The answer is 5 units LENGTH What is the height of the reptile?

LEARNING OUTCOMES At the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to : - state the different ways to measure length - state the different unit for length in the metric system - choose the appropriate measuring tools to measure length - measure length using the correct technique - record length in the standard units

These are the measuring tools that we use to measure length. All the measuring tools shown are in the standard units. measuring tape ruler measuring tape MEASURING TOOLS

Below are the ancient ways to measure span foot arm span stride cubit

different people/creatures has different size of body parts For example a man walk, the pooh below also walk, But all of them has different stride. That is why cannot measure length by using our body parts

How to measure length? Let us look at the pencil below? The length of the ruler is 5 cm – 1 cm = 4 cm

AREA What is area? Area is the total surface covered by the object. The standard unit of area is (squared centimetre) cm 2. Can we measure the area of the below tennis court? Sure, we can measure the area of the tennis court. HOME EXERCISE GAMES LINKS SEARCH ACTIVITIES

LEARNING OUTCOMES At the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to : - compare a square and a rectangle and guess which object has a bigger area - carry out a test to confirm their guesses - state that area = length X width - state the standard unit for area in the metric system - calculate the area of a given shape in standard unit

Even a field has an area that we can measure after we identify the width and its length.

Picture below shows a 1 cm width and a 1 cm length of grids which then can be drawn as 4 cm width and 5 cm length. Moreover, area of an uneven shape can also be measured.

How to measure area of a rectangle? 1.First, we have to identify the length and its width. 2.Look at the blackboard below. a b length = a width = b Area of the blackboard is a x b = ab The unit is cm 2 Now, let say a = 5 cm, b = 3 cm Area, A = 5 x 3 = 15 cm 2

VOLUME What is volume? Volume is a three dimensional space occupied by an object. The standard unit for volume is (cubed centimetre) cm 3. Picture shows a 1cm x 1cm x 1cm cube and 7 cubes of the same size HOME EXERCISE GAMES LINKS SEARCH ACTIVITIES

LEARNING OUTCOMES At the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to : - compare a cube and a cuboid and guess which object has a bigger volume - carry out a test to confirm their guesses - state that area = length X width X height - state the standard unit for volume in the metric system - calculate the volume of cubes and cuboids based on the measurements taken in standard unit

How to measure volume of a cube? 1. First, we have to identify the length, width and height of the cube. 2. Bearing in mind that the length, width and height of a cube is the same. 3. Look at the illustration. It shows the volume of a cube. length = a width = a height = a Volume of a cube is a x a x a = a 3 The unit is cm 3

How to measure volume of a cuboid? 1. First, we have to identify the length, width and height of the cuboid. 2. Unlike cube, the length, width and heigth of a cuboid is different. 3. Look at the illustration. It shows the volume of a cuboid. length = a width = b height = h Volume of a cube is a x b x h = abh The unit is cm 3
