Ch5 Lab 1 Introduction to a Bunsen Burner

Lab 1: Bunsen Burner Basics Make sure the gas is on Light with a striker NEVER leave a flame unattended To extinguish = turn the gas off DO NOT blow out the flame

Ch 5 Lab #2

Pre-Lab: Flame Tests Purpose- To observe and record the colors of light emitted when certain compounds are put into an excited state (by flame or electricity) Hypothesis – Will the colors be the same or different for each compound? Why?

Materials Crystals of: Lithium chloride Sodium chloride Potassium chloride Calcium chloride Strontium chloride Copper chloride Distilled water Bunsen burner Wood splints Unknowns: A, B, C, and D Gas Tubes Crayons Spectra Glasses

Procedures 1.Obtain chemical cups 2.Obtain soaked wood flints from distilled water 3.Using a different wood splint for each chemical, add crystals of a chemical to the end of the wood splint and place over the flame. 4.Observe the color (be specific!!) 5.Put on the spectra glasses and observe the individual lines of color. 6. Record observations in a data table. 7.Clean up your area as instructed by Mrs. LaVigne
