Interrogating Surfaces Studio 2 Haeri Han

1)Stairs covered by diagonal lines of black and yellow. These diagonal lines are used on construction equipment and safety signs. 1.What are the materials being used? : brick (made from clay and shale), concrete, industrial paints 2.What are the components of the materials? : The bricks are made from clay and shale- some of the most abundant materials on earth. Concrete in its most basic form is a mixture of portland cement, coarse aggregate (different types of stones), fine aggregate (different grades of sand), chemical admixtures and water. The industrial paint is a mixture of pigment, binder, liquid, and additives. 3.What is the color of it?: black and yellow 4.What is the shape or pattern of it?: diagonal, a pile of rectangular bricks 5.What texture does it have?: rough, hard-grained, stiff, dry, cold 6.How long will it last?: Bricks are usually last for 30years and concrete can last for thousands of years.

2)A Glass wall of the University Center. 1.What are the materials being used?: glass, concrete, ore 2.What are the components of the materials?: Glass is made by melting together several minerals at very high temperatures. Concrete in its most basic form is a mixture of portland cement, coarse aggregate (different types of stones), fine aggregate (different grades of sand), chemical admixtures and water. An ore is a combination of metal and other elements such as oxygen, sulfur and carbon, which are removed by heating the metal, called smelting. 3.What is the color of it?: dark brown 4.What is the shape or pattern of it?: Geometric lines and patterns of squares and triangles. 5.What texture does it have?: Smooth, cold, hard, glossy 6.How long will it last?: It will last more than a hundred years unless it get a bombardment or any physical shocks. 7: What is the use of it?: The glass windows block the wind and protect the inside from any other harms. The concrete, metal pillars bear the weight of buildings and hold the glass windows.

5) The ceiling of the Met 1.What are the materials being used? : brick(made from clay and shale), concrete 2.What are the components of the materials? : The bricks are made from clay and shale- some of the most abundant materials on earth. Concrete in its most basic form is a mixture of portland cement, coarse aggregate (different types of stones), fine aggregate (different grades of sand), chemical admixtures and water. 3.What is the color of it?: light beige 4.What is the shape or pattern of it?: Octagonal flower patterns. 5.What texture does it have?: smooth, hard, cold, heavy 6.How long will it last?: Bricks are usually last for 30years and concrete can last for thousands of years.

4) Glass ceiling of the Met 1.What are the materials being used?: glass, titanium 2.What are the components of the materials?: Glass is made by melting together several minerals at very high temperatures. titanium is a lustrous transition metal with a silver color, low density and high strength. It is highly resistant to corrosion in seawater, aqua regia and chlorine. 3.What is the color of it?: beige 4.What is the shape or pattern of it?: Regular repetition of rectangular glass. 5. What is the texture of it: smooth, hard 6.How long will it last?: It will last more than a hundred years unless it get a bombardment or any physical shocks. 7: What is the use of it?: The glass windows block the wind and protect the inside from any other harms. The sunlight comes into the museum through the windows works as a bright light that makes sculptures remarkable.

3) MPC (Music Production Center)- Electronic musical instruments 1.What are the materials being used?: Plastic, LED, paint 2.What are the components of the materials?: Most plastics contain organic polymers and these polymers are based on chains of carbon atoms alone or with oxygen, sulfur, or nitrogen. Electrons passing through one crystal to the other produce led light and they fill electron holes and they emit photons (light). Paint is a mixture of pigment, binder, liquid, and additives. 3.What is the color of it?: black, dark grey, white and red. 4.What is the shape or pattern of it?: It has a rectangular box shape. 6.How long will it last?: Normally, plastic items take up to 1000 years to decompose in landfills. 7: What is the use of it?: This item is used to create a music or sound with a computer.

7) Fox fur 1: What is it made of?: Red fox’s skin and fur 2: What is the texture of it?: soft, long, flexible, fluffy 3: How was it produced?: Fur is produced through fur farming which is the practice of breeding or raising certain types of animals for their fur. The process of harvesting fur goes through by human’s hand. 4: What is it used for?: trimmings, scarfs, muffs, jackets and coats. 5: What is the problem of producing for fur?: decreasing numbers of animals, animal violence, untreated, severe infections of animals’ eyes, noses, and ears 6: Where is it supplied and demanded?: 1,000 American fox skins were imported to Britain annually, while 500,000 were exported annually from Germany and Russia.

6) Paper Carnival Costume designed by an Keens-Douglas 1.Who is the designer of this costume?: Keens-Douglas. 2.What is it made of?: White Bristol 3: What are the components of the material?: wood pulp, rice, water plants, cotton, even old clothes 4.What is the design of it?: It is a composition of numeral white paper triangular pyramids. It is a form of carnival dress that has the length that comes down the high-thigh. 5: What is the texture of it?: soft, smooth, spiky, sharp, light 6: How long will it last?: 50 to 100 years

8) 3-D printed footwear. How is the designer of this footwear?: designer Iris Can Herpen and an architect Rem D. Koolhass, co-founder of United Nude. What material is used?: Plastic, fabric What is the shape of it?: curvy, tangled, vine What is the color of it?: black What is the texture of it?: smooth, glossy, light, uneven Is it able to recycle?: Since it is made of plastic, I do not think is recyclable. what kind of technique is used?: 3-D printer

10) Residential Tower in Amsterdam What is the location?: Dordecht, Holland What company built this?: Bluarch How was it designed?: It was designed through computer and physical modeling, and sketches. What is the shape of it?: irregular form of a stack of books. 5. What are the materials of it?: Glass, concrete, titanium

9) A top of Van Herpen’s collection 1.What is it?: It is a collaboration in van Herpen’s SS 2011 collection, Crystallization 2.Who made it?: Architect/CG artist Daniel Widrig and fashion designer Iris van Herpen 3.What is the shape of it?: It has a shape of a curvy animal’s bone structure. It also looks like a swirl of snail’s shell and repeating organic patterns. 4.what is it made of?: plastic 5.What kind of technique was used?: 3-D printer 6: What is the color of it?: Creamy white
