5 Being Prepared to Learn: HBMS Student Services The Program To continue to provide students with the accommodations and modifications to meet their identified exceptionalities through: Diagnostic Evaluations PPTs and Home-School Collaborative Meetings Learning Labs Team Consultations and Classroom Support Specialized Instruction in Math and Reading Counseling -Individual and Groups Speech/Language and Occupational Therapy Collaboration with Outside Agencies

7 Being Prepared to Learn: At School 1.Come Prepared: - come to class with what they need to function in the class: books, notebooks, writing utensils, homework 2. Be Focused: - pay attention during class discussions - stay on task: participate in learning activities - organize class work by using student planner 3.Advocate for themselves: - ask questions - seek help when needed

8 Being Prepared to Learn: At Home 1.Help them set place and time for homework: - plan specific time that homework will be done each day - designate a regular place to work: desk, kitchen table, a corner of the bedroom - check student planner for homework completion AND quality 2. Maintain a balance of academic & other activities - stay involved in sports, music, and the other arts - friendships are important - family commitments 3.Be involved: - talk about what happened: the good and the bad - help: you may know more than you think

11 Being Prepared to Learn: 7th Grade Mathematics The Program Topics in the seventh-grade curriculum include the integration of real-world problem solving with: Ratios and Proportional Relationships The Number System Expressions and Equations Geometry Statistics Probability

12 Being Prepared to Learn: Accelerated Mathematics Course The Program: School Year A two-year accelerated program during grades 7 and 8 The course will be scheduled during the on-team blocks The course combines the standards for 7 th and 8 th -grade grade-level mathematics courses along with Algebra I The program will combine three (3) years of mathematics into two (2) school years so students have the opportunity to take an additional advanced placement mathematics courses in high school

13 Being Prepared to Learn: 7 th Grade Accelerated Mathematics Course The Requirements Rigorous process for selection: Very high aptitude and strong interest in mathematics Independent Learner Universal assessment scores (CMTs, EasyCBM, DRP) Current grade evaluation Teacher recommendations Once in the class: A final grade of at least 80% is required to remain in the program Be cognizant that there are several home projects with increased homework, averaging five (5) hours per week

23 Being Prepared to Learn: What is a “Team”? Teams are an organizational structure that creates opportunities for a group of teachers to work with a common set of students - allowing for collaboration among teachers, integration of curriculum, and coordination of activities to best promote learning for every child. At Har-Bur Middle School: – The two 6th-grade teams are Emerald and Garnet – Each team consists of approximately 115 students – There are six (6) core teachers per team: Language Arts Math Social StudiesScience English (Grammar)Student Support

25 Being Prepared to Learn: Camp Jewell 2014 Camp Jewell is located in Colebrook, CT The Emerald Team will attend on September 18 & 19, 2014 The Garnet Team will attend on September 25 & 26, 2014 We will leave HBMS at 8:45 a.m. and return at 5:30 p.m. Students will need to arrange for rides home.

26 Being Prepared to Learn: Camp Jewell 2014 The two-days the students and teachers spend at Camp Jewell is a unique team-building experience that lays the foundation for students to work cooperatively for the rest of their time at Har-Bur Middle School.

27 Being Prepared to Learn: Camp Jewell 2014 Trip Specifics: The cost of the trip is $ – which includes all activities, transportation, and a hot lunch. Payment options: Payment can be made in full anytime before August 16, 2014 (see packet for details) Four (4) installments of $33.50 before August 16, 2014 (see packet for details) Both 6 th -grade teams are really looking forward to another great trip to Camp Jewell!!
