1 Selecting Under-represented Cohorts & Creating Enhancement Skills & Scholastic Achievements in Physical Therapy (SUCCESS-PT) Project Director: Alexis Ortiz, PT, PhD, SCS, CSCS Co-PD: Wayne Brewer, PT, PhD, MPH, OCS, CSCS

2 Goals of the Program Goal 1: Improve outreach & recruitment in Texas universities serving high number of under-represented minority students. Goal 2: Develop an aggressive and guided admission, matriculation, and orientation plan. Goal 3: Develop an aggressive and guided retention plan during the 1 st year of the curriculum. Goal 4: Increase exposure to minority health clinical & research opportunities.

3 Recruitment Strategies Goal 1: Improve outreach & recruitment in Texas universities serving high number of under-represented minority students. RECRUITMENT Project Directors will visit partnering Institutions with two under- represented DPT students. Orientation regarding admission process. Round table and open discussion with Project Directors and students from under-represented minority backgrounds. Identify with undergraduate advisors/mentors students interested in PT meeting admission criteria who are ready to apply.

4 Recruitment Strategies Goal 1: Improve outreach & recruitment in Texas universities serving high number of under-represented minority students. CONTINUE CONTACTS In conjunction with mentors/advisors Project Directors will help prospective applicants to build a strong profile/application. Students identified by mentors/advisors and Project Directors will be invited to visit TWU-Houston campus.

5 Retention Strategies Goal 2: Develop an aggressive and guided admission, matriculation, and orientation plan. Project Directors and Office of Student Life will help selected applicants through the process of housing, financial aid application, and other ancillary services needed.

6 Retention Strategies Goal 3: Develop an aggressive and guided retention plan during the 1 st year of the curriculum. MENTORSHIP PROGRAM Peer-mentors from 2 nd & 3 rd year DPT Program: Will assist students with review of didactic component, hands-on practical experiences, mock exams/quizzes, study habits, and social support. Monthly mentorship activities: monthly activity between selected students, peer-mentors, Project Directors, and Office of Student Life. Activities to be planned will be comprised of: conflict resolutionbudgeting loan repayment optionsfamily balance stressetc. Monthly seminar with under-represented TWU alumni practicing as physical therapists.

7 Retention Strategies Goal 4: Increase exposure to minority health clinical & research opportunities. Support attendance to TACSM, TPTA, CSM, ACSM. Experiential learning activities in Institutions traditionally serving minority health population such as Harris Health, MDACC, among others. Develop critical inquiry projects in areas targeting minority-health issues.
