OTHER TONGUES WAS A ‘SIGN’ TO UNBELIEVERS’ Signs are sought by unbelievers Signs are sought by unbelievers - Mathew :12: 38 & 39, 1 Cor.1: 22 Other tongues as a sign to unbelievers Other tongues as a sign to unbelievers - Ist Cor.14:21 & 22 - Ist Cor.14:21 & 22 ???? WHY QUOTATION FROM ISAIAH 28:11 ????? ISAIAH 28:11 ?????

Isaiah 28:9, 10 & 11 The Jewish context of ‘ other tongues’ 9 ¶ Whom shall he teach knowledge ? and whom shall he make to understand doctrine ? them that are weaned from the milk, and drawn from the breasts. 9 ¶ Whom shall he teach knowledge ? and whom shall he make to understand doctrine ? them that are weaned from the milk, and drawn from the breasts. 10 For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept ; line upon line, line upon line ; here a little, and there a little : {must be: or, hath been} 10 For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept ; line upon line, line upon line ; here a little, and there a little : {must be: or, hath been} 11 For with stammering lips and another tongue will he speak to this people. {stammering...: Heb. stammerings of lip} 11 For with stammering lips and another tongue will he speak to this people. {stammering...: Heb. stammerings of lip}

B.C Through Moses God pre-warned the nation of Israel that preceding to judgment of God upon them by foreign aggressions, they shall hear ‘Other tongues’ as a sign. – Deuteronomy 28: 49. Prophecy and History of hearing Other Tongues in the O.T. by the unbelieving nation of Israel Prophecy and History of hearing Other Tongues in the O.T. by the unbelieving nation of Israel

B.C The first fulfillment was 15 years before Isaiah prophesied on ‘ Other Tongues’, the Northern Kingdom was captured by Assyria during B.C Of course the Northern Kingdom heard other Tongues’ as a sign of judgment B.C Isaiah's prophecy on ‘ Other tongues’ – Isaiah 28: 11 in the background of Assyrian invasion.

B.C. 605/597/586 - Both prophecies of Moses as well as Isaiah was fulfilled and the Southern Kingdom heard Other Tongues’ as a ‘ sign’, during Babylonian invasion. THUS WHENEVER THE UNBELEVING NATION OF ISARAEL HEARD ‘ OTHER TONGUES’ IT BECAME ‘ A SIGN’ TOWARDS IMPENDING JUDGEMENT. THIS IS THE CONTEXT OF Ist Corinthians 14: 21 & 22.

Dual purpose of Other tongues during the first century prior to the completion of N.T. revelations by A.D Forewarning the unbelieving nation of Israel on the impending fall of Judgment through the Gentile nation of Rome which was fulfilled during A.D No proof in history that ‘Other Tongues were spoken after A.D At the same time, as the rejection of Israel became a blessing to Gentiles, God used ‘other tongues’ as a Gift to proclaim the revelations of God to the ‘unbelieving gentile nations) until its ceasing ( 1st Cor.13: 8) during the Apostolic period itself.

“LAST DAYS” ACTS 2: 17 – 21 - Explained QUOTATION FROM JOEL 2: 28 - Which was part of the Prophecies of the “THE DAY OF THE LORD” … Note that events such as “ wonders in heaven”, “signs in the earth” “ blood” “ fire” “vapor and smoke” “ the sun shall turn into darkness” “ moon into blood” are yet to to be fulfilled and is further prophesied in Revelation. V ‘LAST DAYS’ = ESCHATOS’ One among many meanings is ‘ Latter days’ Identically used in Heb 1:1 ‘ In these last days’ Ist Pet 1:20 Jews always understood the usage as ‘The Messiah’s days’ = THE NT PERIOD

The Pagan background of Corinthians and testing of counterfeit ‘Other Tongues’ Prior to becoming Christians, they were practicing mystery religious rites and rituals, as Corinth was one of the hubs of such pagan mystery religious practices. The beginning of mystery religions are in Gen 11 and the end is in Rev.17. The beginning of mystery religions are in Gen 11 and the end is in Rev.17. Nimrod’s wife Semiramis had been worshipped as a goddess under different names – Ishtar ( wherefrom came ‘Easter’) in Syria, Astarate in Phoenicia, Isis in Egypt, Aphrodite in Greece and Venus in Rome and most probably as Parvathi in India.

Her illegitimate son ‘ Tammuz’ had also been worshipped, as a counterfeit to the true ‘ seed of woman’ and was known as Baal in Phoenicia, Osris in Egypt, Eros in Greece, Cupid in Rome and most probably as Ganapathi in India. After 3rd century A.D., crept into Christianity plenty of mystery religious practices such as Lent Season, Christmas – Easter ( Ishtar), Easter Eggs, Praying towards East, Episcopal hierarchies such as Pope, Bishops, their special dresses, etc.

ERRORS & CORRECTIONS IN THE CORINTHIAN CHURCH Unlike other then existing local churches established from a Jewish background, the Corinthian Believers had an idol worshipping pagan background (Almost similar to churches established in India in tribal areas) – Corinth was a cosmopolitan metropolis. They had erred in several matters They had erred in several matters

a.Ist Cor. 1 & 2, 3, 4– There were Divisions among them and confused Greek philosophy with true revelations of God b.Ch.5 - They practiced fornication c.Ch.6 - Court cases d.Ch.7 – Less understanding in Christian marital relationships e.Ch.8 – They still had problems in terms of offering to idols f.Ch.9 - They dishonored the Apostleship of Paul g.Ch.10 :- 21 – They confused the Lord’s Table with that of ‘Table of Devils’ h.Ch : 20 & 21 – They confused and mixed up the Lord’s Table with their own ‘Feasts’. And i.Ch.12,13 & 14 - They misused the Gifts of God and confused the true Gifts of God such as ‘ Other Tongues’ with ‘counterfeit tongues’

COUNTERFEIT ECSTASTIC TONGUES  Corinthians considered ‘Ecstasy’ to be a supernatural, sensuous communion with a deity.  Drunk ( Eph 5:18) and frenzied they became hypnotic while chanting and whirl( circle) dancing before the idols.  Finally they become trance in that their outward expression would totally become unclear

 Another Form of mystical experience was called ‘ enthusiasm’ which involved mantic formulas, divinations, revelatory dreams and visions.  In Corinthian Church, such certain Christians who had such a pagan mystical background still practiced to be ecstatic and express unclear expressions in the pretext of true ‘Other Tongues’ which God allowed as a Spiritual Gift.

TRUE AND FALSE - ‘ Unknown Tongue’ & ‘Tongues’ Ch.14: 2 & 4 – Used in singular as ‘tongue’ (Glossa) and KJV distinguish it as ‘ Unknown’ ( Not found in original Greek) - apparently to denote it as counterfeited gifts, whereas – Ch.14: 2 & 4 – Used in singular as ‘tongue’ (Glossa) and KJV distinguish it as ‘ Unknown’ ( Not found in original Greek) - apparently to denote it as counterfeited gifts, whereas – Ch 14: 6,18,22,23 & 39) – used as Ch 14: 6,18,22,23 & 39) – used as ‘ tongues’ (glossais) in plural and KJV does not distinguish it with ‘ Unknown’ ‘ tongues’ (glossais) in plural and KJV does not distinguish it with ‘ Unknown’  The exception is Verse 27 – For true ‘tongue’ ( singular) used to express a single man speaking single genuine gift.

CLARIFICATIONS & CORRECTIONS IST CORINTHIANS 12:29-31 IST CORINTHIANS 12:29-31 a) Are all Apostles? YES or NO b) Are all Prophets? YES or NO c) Are all workers of miracles? YES or NO d) Have all the gifts of healing? YES or NO e) Do all speak with tongues? YES or NO EVEN DURING THE APOSTOLIC PERIOD ALL WERE NOT EXPECTED TO SPEAK IN TONGUES

Part st CORINTHIANS 13 V.1 - Tongues of angles - Hyperbolic (exaggerated) to the limits of imagination. Angels always spoke to men in human languages only V.8 - Done away ( katargeo) = “to reduce to inactivity. The verb is used in passive voice in that some other person on element shall cause it to be abolished. That is ‘the perfect’ ( v.10). Ceasing (pauo) = stop by itself of temporary gifts including gift of tongues. ‘Pauo’ is used in active voice in that it shall stop itself. V.10 - ‘That which is perfect’ = The Word of God = Ps. 19:7 The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul:

1 st CORINTHIANS 13:12 FOR NOW WE SEE THROUGH A GLASS, DARKLY; (In an enigma = a puzzling or saying towards which something should be added to have its perfect meaning) - Glass is being compared with forgotten Word of God in James 1: 23 & 24 - BUT THEN FACE TO FACE ( usage to denote clearly) Compare with Numbers 12: 6, 7 & 8 for a similar usage – mouth to mouth (V.8) = Clearly

Clarifications in I Cor. 14 Restrictions in the use of the Gift of tongues and advocates exhorting the gatherings of the saints through prophecies in direct language. Paul clarifies what Corinthians wrongly understood by using certain sarcastic linguistic usages the way he used in Ch.4: 8-10) Verse 2.a - Quotes what Corinthians said ‘Unknown tongue’ (singular - gibberish sounds)‘ unto God better translation is ‘unto a god’ as in Acts 17:23 in the absence of definite article in Greek. Remember that all prayers in the Bible were in intelligible languages, e.g. Jesus’ prayer to Father, Solomon’s prayer in the O.T., etc. V.2.b. ; howbeit in the spirit he speaks mysteries – In his spirit (not the Holy Spirit) he speaks mysteries (of mystery religions)

V.4. Used in sarcastic language “ He that speaketh in ‘ unknown tongue’ edifieth himself”. He used such sarcastic language in 4:8-10 as well. What was the purpose of God giving Spiritual Gifts? Read Ist.Cor.12: 4,5,6 & 7. The answer is “ common spiritual profit”. Thus, Paul here in verse 4 uses sarcastic language. Clarifications in I Cor. 14

Clarifications ……. Ist Cor.14 V.5 – Paul was wishing the impossible for the sake of emphasis. V.5 – Paul was wishing the impossible for the sake of emphasis. V.9 “ For ye shall speak in the air” V.9 “ For ye shall speak in the air” - Sarcastic again. - Sarcastic again. Begin another section. V.12. – If you are so eager to minister spiritual gifts, minister them in the way V.12. – If you are so eager to minister spiritual gifts, minister them in the way God intended: for the benefit of the edification of the church. How can one exercise it? The answer is from V.13 onwards…. V If one speaks in tongues, let him pray for interpretation.

Clarifications – Ist Cor.14 V.14 - They claimed that they pray in tongues = communicating to God through their Spirit. V.14 - They claimed that they pray in tongues = communicating to God through their Spirit. Remember that they had a background of communicating with their ‘gods’ spirit- to-spirit by bypassing the mind and normal understanding. Remember that they had a background of communicating with their ‘gods’ spirit- to-spirit by bypassing the mind and normal understanding. Paul responds sarcastically that how can be the mind understanding be unfruitful while praying? Paul responds sarcastically that how can be the mind understanding be unfruitful while praying? Even though when we pray we pray to God through the Holy Spirit controlled our own spirit (pneuma), the role of mind and understanding cannot be ignored. Spiritual edification cannot exclude mind ( Rom 12:1-2, Eph.4:23, Col.3:10) No question of bypassing the mind and understanding in praise and prayer. No question of bypassing the mind and understanding in praise and prayer.

V. 18 – Yes I have that Gift and I use it rightly, however, I prefer to teach directly. V.23 to 25 - Greatness of Prophecy than speaking in tongues. V. 26 – 38 - Regulating the exercise of speaking in tongues as long as it existed in the early church as a ‘temporary gift’. V ‘Forbid not’ as long until it ceased.
