The Atom - Continued

What are quarks? protons & neutrons can be separated into smaller particles called quarks these are a different kind of particle that makes up all the other known particles in the nucleus all nuclear particles are thought to be combinations of three quarks quarks have properties called “flavor” & “color”

Forces Within the Atom what keeps an atom together? why don’t electrons fly away? four forces account for the behavior of the subatomic particles:

Electromagnetic Forces particles either attract or repel each other depends on their charge +/+ & -/- repel +/- attract keeps electrons in orbit around nucleus

Strong Forces glues protons together keeps nucleus together greatest of 4 forces opposes the electromagnetic force

Weak Forces responsible for radioactive decay neutron in the nucleus changes into a proton & an electron

Gravity weakest force force of attraction between all matter depends on the mass of objects & their distance to each other role in atom not clear
