May 13, 2011 Collaboration meetingM. Karppinen CERN TE-MSC4

Status of cable production at CERN (1/2) 15.1 mm, 40 strands cable produced in 2010 and beginning 2011 (0.7 mm Cu and OST 108/127 stack material) – Stable key-stoned cabling at pitch 90 mm – Average cabling degradation on OST 108/127 0.7 mm stack is 2.7 % at 12 T, 4 % at 11 T (good) – Maximum single strand degradation observed is 7 % May 13, 2011 Collaboration meetingM. Karppinen CERN TE-MSC5

Status of cable production at CERN (2/2) 14.7 mm, 40 strands tools being finalized (mandrel OK, rollers to re-touch). Cabling imminent OST 108/127 0.7 mm strand order status – 4.7 km delivered (Jc > 2500 A/mm 2, RRR ≈ 70) – 25 km expected by May 31 st (delivery to be verified) Bruker PIT 0.7 mm strand order status – Specifications prepared – Meeting at Hanau on May 31st May 13, 2011 Collaboration meetingM. Karppinen CERN TE-MSC6

Cable Insulation Development S-glass braiding (on 4.5 mm cable) May 13, 2011 Collaboration meetingM. Karppinen CERN TE-MSC7

Coil Fabrication Tooling The Fermi mandrel design is being adapted to our winding and curing tooling. The mandrel blocks have been redrawn and converted metric & ISO. Price enquiry to launch this week. MB (Jeumont) curing moulds will be used for curing the binder – Spacers, oil circuits connections, coil handling tools to design May 13, 2011 Collaboration meetingM. Karppinen CERN TE-MSC8

Winding Tooling May 13, 2011 Collaboration meetingM. Karppinen CERN TE-MSC9

End Spacers CNC-machined set #1 complete (minimum strain design) Lead-time at CERN 8-10 weeks/set Industrial procurement: – 3 offers for 5-axis machining (to confirm after decision on spacer design) – Lead-times 6-10 weeks for the 1 st set – Relatively high programming and tooling cost SLS as fallback solution May 13, 2011 Collaboration meetingM. Karppinen CERN TE-MSC10

Curing Tooling Recycle LHC MB moulds – Spacers and base plate being designed – Longest available block 1960 mm – Oil circuit to refurbish – Dimensional control to do Re-use LHC MQ curing press May 13, 2011 Collaboration meetingM. Karppinen CERN TE-MSC11

2-in-1 Structural Analysis May 13, 2011 Collaboration meetingM. Karppinen CERN TE-MSC12 Pre-loading at the pole

Summary 11 T Dipole project is progressing on several fronts at CERN: – EM studies – Quench analysis – Structural analysis – Beam optics studies – Cable development – Tooling design & procurements Coil winding is expected to commence in Nov- Dec this year May 13, 2011 Collaboration meetingM. Karppinen CERN TE-MSC13
