March 22 – 28, 2009 “If the watchman sees the sword coming and does not blow the trumpet to warn the people and the sword comes and takes the life of one of them, that man will be taken away because of his sin, but I will hold the watchman accountable for his blood.” (Ezekiel 33:6, New International Version) Weekly World Watch Andy Walton’s To skip the introductory slides and go straight to this weeks developments click here.
What is a Weekly World Watch? Israel: The continuing conflict in the Middle East and focus on Jerusalem. Europe: Its developing union, both political and religious. Russia: Its return to anti-Western ways as Bible prophecy’s “king of the north.” The UK and the US: Bible prophecy’s “king of the south.” Moral standards in decline and violence on the increase. WWW presentations in PowerPoint can be ordered as audio/visual CDs by clicking here. Move your mouse to place the cursor on the blue link and click.clicking here The idea is simple. It is to look at current events and compare them to events spoken of in the Bible.. I hope to build up a picture of God’s hand working in the affairs of this world. God is bringing about a day when all nations will be gathered to Jerusalem to battle. At that time God will send His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, back to this earth. Jesus will then establish God’s kingdom on earth. This kingdom will last for ever. This is our hope and the reason we watch. Increasing natural disasters: including earthquake, famine etc The following six themes will appear repeatedly in WWW:
HEADLINE EVENT COMMENT News Photo The source of the headline and the date are included. Each WWW looks at a few key developments that have happened during the past week. It is in no way meant to be exhaustive – just a look at those events I saw as significant from a Biblical point of view. What is in a Weekly World Watch? BIBLE QUOTE This is normally one verse which backs up why the event that has occurred is interesting from a Biblical perspective. Please read in its context. Unless stated otherwise, all quotes are from the King James Version. (Book, chapter, and verse) This is straight from a news report that caught my eye because it looked significant from a Biblical perspective, usually that of prophecy. Every WWW event slide has the following format. To reveal each block of text just left click your mouse or press the space bar. You control when it appears. This is the reporter’s description of the event. It is always a direct quotation from the news report and reflects the understanding of the reporter and editors. This is my comment on why the event is interesting to a Bible student. The intention of the WWW is to offer brief Biblical perspectives without going into detail. If more detail is desired, please e-mail me: (firstname.lastname@example.org).

U.S. officials say Israel struck in Sudan Sudan is the largest and one of the most diverse countries in Africa. The northern half is Muslim the southern half is Christian. There have been 2 decades of civil war between the two areas. 1.5 million people have been killed! The infrastructure of the country is in tatters. The current president is Omar al-Bashir. He is a military leader who came to power through a military coup in 1989. He introduced an Islamic legal code on a national level. The International Criminal Court issued a warrant for his arrest a couple of weeks ago on the 4 th March 2009 on counts of war crimes etc. It now appears from several reports that Israel attacked Sudan 2 months ago. The Bible says that one of the nations that will invade Israel with Russia is Ethiopia. Ancient Ethiopia covered a larger area that includes SUDAN! How accurate the Bible is…. Israeli warplanes bombed a convoy of trucks in Sudan in January that was believed to be carrying arms to be smuggled into Gaza, according to American officials. Israeli officials refused to confirm or deny the attack, but intelligence analysts noted that the strike was consistent with other measures Israel had taken to secure its borders. American officials said the airstrike took place as Israel sought to stop the flow of weapons to Gaza during the weeks it was fighting a war with Hamas there. Although the airstrike was carried out two months ago, it was not publicized until Sudanese officials said Thursday that a convoy of trucks in the remote eastern part of Sudan was bombed by what they called “American fighters,” killing dozens. The strikes were first reported on several Internet-based news sites, including cbsnews.com. The area where the Sudanese said the attack occurred, near Port Sudan on the Red Sea, is an isolated patch of eastern Sudan near the Egyptian border New York Times, March 26, 2009 EVENT COMMENT I will bring thee forth, and all thine army………even a great company with bucklers and shields, all of them handling swords: Persia, Ethiopia, and Libya with them BIBLE QUOTE (Ezekiel 38:4,5)
Obama sharpens tone on Israel, calls for two-state solution We mentioned last week how Iran had rejected president Obama’s reconciliatory words. Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said that America would have to stop supporting the “Zionist regime”. Debkafile's political analysts said this week that they “do not expect Obama to be kind to the Jewish State and its new government. He may feel it necessary to respond to the Iranian supreme ruler Ali Khamenei's stipulation that change in Washington must also affect "unconditional US support" for Israel.” So in other words if America wants better relations with Iran it has to sacrifice relations with Israel. Just a few days later Obama in a TV broadcast said the status quo with Israel and the Palestinians is unsustainable and two states are critical to achieve peace and security. Once more a leader talks of peace and security. It will lead to war. Asked if the rise of a Netanyahu government would make peacemaking more difficult, US president Barack Obama told a televised news conference Wednesday night, March 25: "It's not easier than it was, but I think it's just as necessary." He added: What we do know is that the status quo is unsustainable, that it is critical for us to advance a two-state solution where Israelis and Palestinians can live side by side in their own states with peace and security. Obama noted uncertainty not only about the makeup of the new Israeli government – Netanyahu must submit his lineup to the president before April 3 – but also the Palestinian Authority "which is badly divided." Tuesday night, Labor leader Ehud Barak won his party round to joining the Netanyahu government. Debkafile, March 25, 2009 EVENT COMMENT For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape. The word safety means security BIBLE QUOTE (1 Thessalonians 5:3)
Netanyahu 'will be peace partner' Note the last line – the incoming prime minister (Benjamin Netanyahu) is under pressure to publicly support a two-state solution. This pressure is coming from America. Netanyahu is also talking up peace. He wants to be a “partner for peace”. In fact as we reported two weeks ago Netanyahu actually believes war is likely in the next 6 months. Two states is the world’s solution to the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians. It is NOT God’s solution. He has regathered the Jews to the land he promised them. Joel 3:2 says that the nations of the world have parted (divided) MY land. It is not land that Obama, Netanyahu or anyone else for that matter has the authority to divide. The reason that God brings all nations down to the valley of Jehoshaphat is because they have scattered his people and divided his land. Even now the land is divided with a wall snaking through the midst of it. Let us watch for God’s land to become the very centre of the world’s attention as the new American president pushes to divide it. Israel's next prime minister, Likud leader Benjamin Netanyahu, has said his incoming government will be a "partner for peace" with the Palestinians. He said he would negotiate with the Palestinian Authority, a change of tack after being critical of previous talks. Correspondents say the right-winger is trying to temper his image as an opponent of the peace process. Palestinian officials said Mr Netanyahu must back the idea of a Palestinian state to be considered a partner. The incoming prime minister, who previously led Israel from 1996 to 1999, is also coming under international pressure to publicly support a two-state solution. BBConline, March 25, 2009 EVENT COMMENT I will also gather all nations, and will bring them down into the valley of Jehoshaphat, and will plead with them there for my people and for my heritage Israel, whom they have scattered among the nations, and parted my land. BIBLE QUOTE (Joel 3:2)
Global warming sparks new ice-cold war We first mentioned Russia’s interest in the NORTH Pole in the WWW back in August 2007. At that time the headline was “Russia plants flag under North Pole.” 20 months later it’s back in the headlines with Russia dedicating a military force to the area. You will note the reason for this. ENERGY SUPPLIES. Russian wealth is built on energy. The more it controls the wealthier it is and the more influence it has. This ties in with Ezekiel 38 that says Russia comes down to take a spoil. Israel has recently found enormous gas reserves. The king of the NORTH will head south at some point…. The race to militarise the Arctic began in earnest yesterday as Russia announced that it will deploy a dedicated military force to protect its interests in the oil and gas-rich polar region. The operation to gain control of vast mineral resources under the ice cap is being put in the direct control of Moscow's intelligence services - the former KGB. Its Arctic strategy document said the creation of a group of forces there must 'ensure military security under various military-political circumstances'. Russia is vying with the U.S, Canada, Norway, and Denmark (Greenland), which also have territory touching Arctic waters, for the area's oil and gas reserves. It is building six new nuclear submarines, which will be armed with improved nuclear- tipped cruise missiles, the ITAR-Tass news agency reported yesterday. They will be 'capable of ensuring military security,' in the region, according to the report. The dispute between the five countries has got increasingly heated as it became apparent that as global warming melted the polar icecaps, natural resources buried beneath the surface would be much easier to access. Daily Mail, March 27, 2009 EVENT COMMENT and the king of the NORTH shall come against him like a whirlwind, with chariots, and with horsemen, and with many ships; and he shall enter into the countries, and shall overflow and pass over. He shall enter also into the glorious land BIBLE QUOTE (Daniel 11:40)
Gordon Brown and Queen in talks about lifting Catholic ban Gordon Brown has opened talks with Buckingham Palace on removing the 308-year- old law which bars members of the Royal Family from marrying Roman Catholics. At present, members of the Royal Family are forbidden by the Act of Settlement from converting to Roman Catholicism or marrying someone from the Catholic faith unless they agree to being removed from the order of succession. The Prime Minister is understood to be in favour of overhauling the laws on succession, and Buckingham Palace is also thought to be ``open'' to the plans. Two of the main impediments to reform - the need to secure the consent of the Commonwealth, and concerns about the monarch's status as head of the Church of England - have both been discussed. Monarchs and members of their family in the order of succession have been banned from marrying Roman Catholics since the Glorious Revolution of 1688, when the Catholic James II was overthrown in favour of the Protestant William of Orange. The prohibition is enshrined in the Bill of Rights passed that year, and the 1701 Act of Settlement. Daily Telegraph, March 26, 2009 EVENT COMMENT At the end of seventy years, the LORD will deal with Tyre. She will return to her hire as a prostitute and will ply her trade with all the kingdoms on the face of the earth. BIBLE QUOTE (Isaiah 23:17 NIV) So does this matter? It does! The monarch of Britain swears to defend THE FAITH. This is the protestant faith of the Anglican communion. A Roman Catholic monarch would instead owe allegiance to the Pope (as all Catholics do) and therefore this would amount to loss of sovereignty. To us it is more than this. Britain for 1000 years lived under Catholic rule - known as the Dark Ages. With the reformation came new light. People could read the Bible in their own language and see the perversion of Catholic teachings. Priests forgiving sins, Hail Mary, confessionals etc. Britain has now become godless and immoral. And now at the time of the end she looks to repeal this 300 year old law. The Bible says a latter day Tyre (Britain) would become like a harlot. She has..
Archbishop: ‘God won’t save mankind’ Humanity risks being "choked, drowned or starved by its own stupidity" unless action is taken to save the environment, the Archbishop of Canterbury has warned. In his most apocalyptic predictions in recent years, Dr Rowan Williams claimed that the Earth is now facing a "whole range of 'doomsday' prospects" from climate change to the destruction of delicate ecosystems and even attack from "bio-terror" weapons. He brushed aside the views of those who are sceptical about global warming or deny mankind is to blame, saying that it is impossible to deny that entire countries are in peril from rising sea levels. And he told fellow believers that God is not going to intervene and protect the human race as we have a "terrible freedom" to decide our own destiny. Daily Telegraph, March 26, 2009 EVENT COMMENT Let them alone: they be blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind lead the blind, both shall fall into the ditch. The word ditch = pit = grave BIBLE QUOTE (Matthew 15:14) The Archbishop is the head of the Anglican communion. The same man who last year said that the nativity spoken of in the Bible is “a legend.” His comments this week show is total lack of understanding of God’s plan and purpose with THE EARTH. Most of Christianity believes that HEAVEN is where we end up and therefore the earth is secondary in God’s plan and purpose. We know that the earth is not only central - it is where the faithful will live forever. The Archbishop tells us that God will not intervene. Wrong. God will intervene. He has appointed a day in which he will judge the world by sending his Son. Acts 17:31. The Archbishop tells us that humanity decides its own destiny. Wrong. God decides the destiny of mankind. He rules in the kingdoms of men. Daniel 4:17. Mankind will NOT be allowed to destroy the earth. The promise of God is that the whole earth will one day be filled with his glory. Numbers 14:21. The blind religious leaders of this world are leading the blind into a pit. (the grave).
