November 21 - 28, 2010 “If the watchman sees the sword coming and does not blow the trumpet to warn the people and the sword comes and takes the life of one of them, that man will be taken away because of his sin, but I will hold the watchman accountable for his blood.” (Ezekiel 33:6, New International Version) Weekly World Watch Andy Walton’s To skip the introductory slides and go straight to this weeks developments click here.
What is a Weekly World Watch? Israel: The continuing conflict in the Middle East and focus on Jerusalem. Europe: Its developing union, both political and religious. Russia: Its return to anti-Western ways as Bible prophecy’s “king of the north.” The UK and the US: Bible prophecy’s “king of the south.” Moral standards in decline and violence on the increase. WWW presentations in PowerPoint can be ordered as audio/visual CDs by clicking here. Move your mouse to place the cursor on the blue link and click.clicking here The idea is simple. It is to look at current events and compare them to events spoken of in the Bible.. I hope to build up a picture of God’s hand working in the affairs of this world. God is bringing about a day when all nations will be gathered to Jerusalem to battle. At that time God will send His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, back to this earth. Jesus will then establish God’s kingdom on earth. This kingdom will last for ever. This is our hope and the reason we watch. Increasing natural disasters: including earthquake, famine etc The following six themes will appear repeatedly in WWW:
HEADLINE EVENT COMMENT News Photo The source of the headline and the date are included. Each WWW looks at a few key developments that have happened during the past week. It is in no way meant to be exhaustive – just a look at those events I saw as significant from a Biblical point of view. What is in a Weekly World Watch? BIBLE QUOTE This is normally one verse which backs up why the event that has occurred is interesting from a Biblical perspective. Please read in its context. Unless stated otherwise, all quotes are from the King James Version. (Book, chapter, and verse) This is straight from a news report that caught my eye because it looked significant from a Biblical perspective, usually that of prophecy. Every WWW event slide has the following format. To reveal each block of text just left click your mouse or press the space bar. You control when it appears. This is the reporter’s description of the event. It is always a direct quotation from the news report and reflects the understanding of the reporter and editors. This is my comment on why the event is interesting to a Bible student. The intention of the WWW is to offer brief Biblical perspectives without going into detail. If more detail is desired, please e-mail me: (email@example.com).

Israeli law keeps tight hold on Jerusalem Any future Israeli peace agreement with the Palestinians that involves ceding parts of occupied Jerusalem and the Golan Heights will require either the agreement of two- thirds of Israel's parliament or be passed by a national referendum. The conditions were contained in a bill passed into law by Israeli MPs on Monday by a vote of 66 to 33 in the 120-seat Knesset. The new law applies only to land annexed according to Israeli law - mainly Palestinian East Jerusalem and the Golan Heights, which is claimed by Syria - and does not include the West Bank, which is still officially occupied by the Israel Defence Forces. The Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, welcomed the law, saying the success of any future peace agreement needed broad national support. ''I have faith in the public that they will support, on the day of decision, a peace agreement that conformed to Israel's national interests,'' he said. The bill had the backing of Israel's right-wing parties, most of which are opposed to giving up any territory seized by Israel after the 1967 Six Day War. Sydney Morning Herald, November 24, 2010 EVENT COMMENT And it shall come to pass in that day, that I will seek to destroy all the nations that come against Jerusalem. And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplications: and they shall look upon me whom they have pierced, BIBLE QUOTE The law passed this week in Jerusalem about Jerusalem is very significant. It means that even if agreement was reached with the Palestinians any decision to divide Jerusalem would have to go to a national referendum unless two thirds of the Knesset back it. This would be utterly unimaginable so the referendum would be certain. This in effect would make the dividing of Jerusalem immensely difficult as the majority of the Israeli public (though willing to cede the West Bank) do not countenance the dividing of their eternal capital. The battle lines are therefore being drawn up. It will surely not belong before a real battle begins over this city. Which in turn means it surely cannot be long until Jesus Christ returns from heaven to claim Jerusalem as HIS capital. (Zechariah 12:9-10) The Knesset building
Syrian FM warns of war with Israel Four days after Knesset approval of referendum law, Walid Moallem says 'full return of Golan Heights is not negotiable.' He adds that all sides will lose if new war breaks out in region. Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Moallem on Friday warned of the ramifications of a war with Israel. "There is no doubt that closing the horizons to peace may lead to a possible war. This option always exists in our region, as Israel usually outrageously evades the commitment to peace," he told Russian newspaper Moscow News. "I want to stress that a new war will not result in a winner and loser," the Syrian foreign minister added. "Everyone will lose because the existing advanced military technology can cause great damage, even for the side with huge military power.“ Moallem was asked about the chances for peace negotiations with Israel, four days after the Knesset approved a law requiring the government to hold a referendum on any withdrawal from territories under full Israeli sovereignty. Israel National News, November 26, 2010 EVENT COMMENT The burden of Damascus. Behold, Damascus is taken away from being a city, and it shall be a ruinous heap. And in that day it shall come to pass, that the glory of Jacob shall be made thin, and the fatness of his flesh shall wax lean. This describes a zero sum game! BIBLE QUOTE Syria is also agitated about the change in law this week in Israel. The law affected not only Jerusalem but also the Golan Heights. The Golan Heights is the one area that Syria wants returned. It is also another area that Israel is very unlikely to give up. The Syrian Foreign Minister therefore warns of war and the fact it will be a zero sum situation i.e. there will not be a winner and a loser. In fact the Bible says a similar thing in relation to the future war between Israel and Syria. Isaiah 17 speaks of a time when Damascus (capital of Syria) will be utterly destroyed and left in ruins. This is still to happen. At the time it does happen notice what happens to Israel. Verse 4 says that Jacob (Israel) will be made thin and will wax lean. i.e. brought low and famished… (Isaiah 17:1+4)
Queen's Gulf visit: What the Gulf means to the UK The visit has taken on an unusually political flavour both with the change of government in Britain and increasing tensions with Iran a short distance away on the other side of the Gulf. The Queen has arrived in Abu Dhabi at the start of a tour of the Gulf intended to strengthen ties with key military and economic allies. The Queen and Prince Philip made a first, symbolic visit to the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, one of the world's largest, named in honour the founding father of the United Arab Emirates. Sheikh Zayed al-Nahyan, who was also ruler of Abu Dhabi, hosted the royal couple on their last visit to the country, in 1979, and his eldest son and successor, Sheikh Khalifa, is their first host this week. On Thursday night they will fly on to Muscat, where they will take part in celebrations to mark the 40th anniversary of Sultan Qaboos's coming to power. Both countries are former British protectorates, where the royal family also has strong personal ties with local leaders. The United Arab Emirates end of the visit was rearranged after a planned tour last year Daily Telegraph, November 25, 2010 EVENT COMMENT Sheba, and Dedan, and the merchants of Tarshish, with all the young lions thereof, shall say unto thee, Art thou come to take a spoil? hast thou gathered thy company to take a prey? to carry away silver and gold, to take away cattle and goods, to take a great spoil? BIBLE QUOTE (Ezekiel 38:13) This week the Queen has been visiting friendly Arab nations in the Gulf. There are strong ties between Britain and Oman and The United Arab Emirates. The idea of the visit is to strengthen MILITARY and ECONOMIC ties! This is very interesting from a Biblical perspective. Britain is Tarshish. The Arab two nations mentioned are in the ancient area of Dedan. Both Tarshish and Dedan are mentioned in the same verse in Ezekiel 38. Notice in the verse below Dedan and the MERCHANTS of Tarshish. What is Britain interested in? TRADE. But this is not just a economic alliance but a military one. How do we know? Because this chapter is in the context of war against Israel…
Russia planning to open new naval bases abroad President Dmitry Medvedev said on Thursday Russia was looking to open new naval bases abroad to increase the global reach of a military that shrunk when the Soviet Union collapsed. Soviet forces drew on over a dozen naval bases in Europe, South America, Africa and South East Asia in the 1970s and 1980s; but the post-Soviet economic crisis, fuel shortages and a reduction of the military confined forces largely to home bases. Vladimir Putin began rebuilding military power after he assumed the Russian presidency in 2000. Last year, state news agency Itar-Tass cited military sources saying Russia had decided to establish naval bases in Libya and Yemen and expand facilities at the Syrian port of Tartus. Asked during a televised meeting with senior military officers whether Russia was planning to set up new foreign bases, Mr Medvedev said: "I would make no secret of the fact that we have certain ideas on this theme." "But I would not name them aloud, for obvious reasons." Daily Telegraph, November 25, 2010 EVENT COMMENT For the day is near, even the day of the LORD is near, a cloudy day; it shall be the time of the heathen. Ethiopia, and Libya, and Lydia, and all the mingled people, and Chub, and the men of the land that is in league, shall fall with them by the sword. We mentioned last week about the upgrading of Russian warships. This week more announcements! Russia is wanting to setup new naval bases to “increase global reach” for its military. Is this not precisely what we expect Russia to be like at the time of the end. A “king of the north” that is looking outside its own sphere of influence. It is looking south and wanting to become a superpower again. One of the places Russia is keen to develop a base is Libya. Libya is mentioned specifically as being one of the nations that is aligned to Russia when it invades Israel. In Ezekiel 30 we read of Libya being “in league” with other nations. The “day of the LORD” comes at this time…. BIBLE QUOTE (Ezekiel 30:2+5)
North Korea bombs South Korean island Two South Korean soldiers were killed and a dozen injured after North Korea fired dozens of artillery shells onto a South Korean island setting more than 60 houses ablaze and sending civilians fleeing in terror. The attack, which comes days after it emerged that North Korea was pressing ahead with its illegal nuclear programme, marks a serious further escalation of tensions on the Korean Peninsula. The incident is believed to have been sparked by South Korean military exercises in the area, which the North had objected to. Officials said “dozens” of artillery rounds had landed on Yeonpyeong Island at in the Yellow Sea, 50 miles off the South’s northwest coast in an area close to a disputed sea border. Other reports suggested around 200 shells could have been fired in the attack which began at 2.34pm local time. F-16 fighter jets were scrambled and South Korean land-based forces returned fire on the North as civilians were evacuated to emergency bunkers, according to witnesses quoted by the Seoul-based cable news television channel YT Daily Telegraph, November 23, 2010 EVENT COMMENT Proclaim ye this among the Gentiles; Prepare war, wake up the mighty men, let all the men of war draw near; let them come up: Beat your plowshares into swords, and your pruninghooks into spears: let the weak say, I am strong. War is in the air and perhaps we have seen the first salvos of it this week. North Korea launched a totally unprovoked attack on South Korea and is threatening more. This comes after the sinking of a South Korean warship only a few months ago. America is joining South Korea in war games near North Korea starting tomorrow. China has warned America and South Korea not to stage military acts near its coast. All this seems a long way off and unrelated to Bible prophecy. However it is neither. This conflict is in fact a fault line between the king of the north and the king of the south. China / Russia support North Korea. America / Britain support the South. Conflict is coming – centred on Jerusalem but encompassing the entire globe. BIBLE QUOTE (Joel 3:9-10)
Met Office says 2010 'among hottest on record' This year is heading to be the hottest or second hottest on record, according to the Met Office. It says the past 12 months are the warmest recorded by Nasa, and are second in the UK data set, HadCRUT3. The Met Office says it is very confident that man-made global warming is forcing up temperatures. Until now, the hottest year on record has been 1998, when temperatures were pushed up by a strong El Nino - a warming event in the Pacific. This year saw a weaker El Nino, and that fizzled out to be replaced by a La Nina cooling event. So scientists might have expected this year's temperatures to be substantially lower than 1998 - but they are not. Within the bounds of statistical error, the two years are likely to be the same. "It's a sign that we've got man-made global warming," said Dr Vicky Pope, head of climate science advice at the Met Office. BBConline, November 26, 2010 EVENT COMMENT BIBLE QUOTE As the world hots up from a military tension point of view it also hots up from a physical point of view. The increased temperatures have caused some of the most devastating fires this year we have ever seen. Many nations have been affected by these fires. It’s a vicious circle. High and dryer temperatures cause more fires. More fires cause more carbon dioxide which in turn increased temperatures. These exact thoughts are expressed in Science Journal “When vegetation burns, the resulting release of stored carbon increases global warming. The more fires, the more carbon dioxide released, the more warming -- and the more warming, the more fires and so on.” We know there will be literal fire and smoke in the last days. It is a prelude to the judgement of fire that is coming on the earth. We should examine NOW how we live… But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men. But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; …, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up. (2 Peter 3:7+10)
