FAFSA/CALIFORNIA DREAM ACT APPLICATION SUPPORT SESSION 1

STUDENTS WILL UNDERSTAND THE STEPS TO SECURE FINANCIAL AID FOR COLLEGE. STUDENTS WILL LEARN ABOUT THE STUDENT AID REPORT (SAR) AND EXPECTED FAMILY CONTRIBUTION (EFC). STUDENTS WILL SUBMIT THEIR FAFSA OR CALIFORNIA DREAM ACT APPLICATION WITH THE SUPPORT OF MENTORS. IF STUDENTS ARE UNABLE TO COMPLETE THEIR FAFSA OR DREAM APPLICATION IN TODAY’S WORKSHOP, THEY WILL KNOW WHAT ITEMS THEY NEED TO COMPLETE. Lesson Objectives 2

Breakout 1: Recap and Financial Aid Evolution (15 minutes) 3 Directions: We will be playing “Financial Aid Evolution” again to review the steps for securing student aid for college. The flow chart below is shown on the “After You File” handout. A gesture will be demonstrated to illustrate each step in the process. The goal is to evolve from one step to the next and finish at “Step 5 – Attending College.” How will students evolve from one step to the next? By playing a lively game of “Rock, Paper, Scissors!”

Breakout 1: Recap and Financial Aid Evolution (15 minutes) 4 HOW TO PLAY: 1.Everyone begins at “Step 1” and makes the associated gesture. Players can only play against other players in the same evolutionary stage (e.g. making the same gesture). 2.The entire class will pair up and play, “rock, paper, scissors.” “Rock” beats “scissors,” “scissors” beats “paper,” and “paper” beats “rock.” 3.The winner from each pair “evolves” to “Step 2,” holds up their new gesture, and plays against someone who is also in this evolutionary stage. The loser from each pair remains in Step 1, holds up their sign, and plays against someone else in the same stage. Remember: Players can only play against other players in the same evolutionary stage. 4.Play continues for 5 minutes or until everyone reaches Step 5.

Breakout 2: After Filing for Aid (10 minutes) 5 Directions: Complete and discuss the “After You File” handout. Remember, filing the FAFSA/Dream application is just the beginning of the financial aid process.

Breakout 3: Submitting Your FAFSA/Dream Application (20+ minutes) 6 Directions: You will momentarily take our your FAFSA/ Dream Application materials and move to a computer. You have the remainder of the workshop to complete your FAFSA or Dream Application. Use the “Submitting Your FAFSA/Dream Application” handout to get started.

Reflect and Review (5 minutes) 7 Individually complete your “Student Reflection” handout. Then spend 2-3 minutes in your small group sharing what you learned or how you can apply today’s workshop content. Think about: What information resonated with you about today’s workshop? What information was new to you? What information was most helpful to learn about? Why? What knowledge can you pass on or share with family members? Be ready to share your key learnings with the class.

Closing (2 minutes) 8 HOMEWORK: Talk with parent(s) about your FAFSA/Dream Application experience. Follow up on any outstanding questions or information needed and submit your FAFSA/Dream Application. PRE-WORK FOR THE NEXT WORKSHOP:
