STALEMATE DUE TO TRENCH WARFARE Very little was gained by either side in this “war to end all wars”. Two years of fighting had passed in a war that was to have lasted only weeks.

UNCONDITIONAL SURRENDER The loser is forced to accept: - total guilt for the war - all penalties/punishment France & England punished Germany severely in the Treaty of Versailles. US does not sign it.
TREATY OF VERSAILLES The US did not sign the treaty because they do not want to punish Germany. Since the US does not sign the treaty, they do not join the League of Nations (positive). The US Senate does not want to join the League of Nations because they do not want to get pulled into foreign conflicts.
