Facts about Hemsö Fästning The fortress was the largest coastal defense facility in Sweden, and is the only surviving of it’s kind It has been of a great importance for the Swedish army because of its location 1809 was the last time the enemies were in the area At 40 meters deep in the mountain 320 soldiers served in the shelter of the rock wich would survive a nuclear attack
More facts Hemsö Fästning was built during the First World War for the Defense of Ångermanälven mouth. Hemsö Fästning is located on the 140 meter tall Storråberget with panoramic views over the sea, islands and coast. In the fortress there are a kitchen, dining room, exhibition, dormitories and washrooms. This is the entry of the fortress
Facts about Hemsön The island has a resident population but also holds summer cottage areas and camping. Sågsand is a popular sandy beach, with a couple of disused bunkers and trenches in the vicinity. Hemsön has a ferry for car traffic, which runs every half hour from Sanna berth.
