5 GOAL To empower the Turkana communities on the importance of environmental conservation coupled with sustainable exploitation of valuable natural resources, engage in demand for justice and respect to humanity.

6 MISSION STATEMENT Mobilize the poor and marginalized turkana communities on importance of good governance, respect of humanity and realization of justice in order to sustainably exploit and conserve natural resources through enhanced capacities and market driven approaches for economic empowerment aimed at alleviating poverty.

7 OBJECTIVES To empower and support local initiatives aimed at promoting democratic governance and reforms To enhance a market-driven approaches to dry land products aimed at economic empowerment of vulnerable groups to alleviate poverty through adoption of alternative livelihoods by local communities Promote advocacy issues pertaining environmental governance and Natural resource management To promote and build the capacity of the local people to be able to engage, demand and sustainability of rule of law to all through access to justice and human rights education

8 TUBAE History Status: CBO and in advance stages is waiting for acknowledgment from registrar of societies as TRUST. TUBAE operates in Turkana and intends to extend to Pokot, Elgeyo marakwet, Marsabit Counties and on cross border to Ethiopia, South Sudan and Uganda. Our offices: Head office based in Lodwar town at Lodwar Post office (Telecom Building), Sub offices; Turkana South at Kalemungorok centre (World vision – Building)

9 Transition 1998 –Juluk riverine association (vegetable group) 2000 – TURIPO (Turkwell Riverine Project Organization) covered Kaputir location and in 2004 extended to Kalemungorok introduced industrial production and value addition to NRM 2006 – TUBAE (Turkana Bio Aloe Organization) umbrella of Aloe management units in entire Turkana districts 2012 – Trust (rebranded as The African Marginalized Groups Defenders Trust - TAMAGDET)

25 Governance 1.Poor governance – has no development agenda and not people driven 2.State institution not executing their roles as expected thus; high insecurity with rampant loss of lives and property, displacement of persons and eviction thus many areas deserted 3.Local community participation and involvement due to low capacities 4.Development actors poor strategies in dev implementation 5.Ignorance to invest in Research and development 6.Poor leadership with pathetic infrastructure has hindered investments opportunities (roads & no communication in 60% 0f the County )

26 Livelihoods and food security Low diversification on better livelihoods option to nomadic lifestyles 1.Availability of arable land to support farming i.e. existence of irrigation schemes along river Turkwell; Kainuk, Loyapat, Nakwamoru, Kapelibok, Juluk, Nawoyaregae, Katilu and Lokapel. 2.Valuable natural resources; Aloe, resin, gum Arabica, incense, oil and gas, gold, gypsum to name but a few, 3.Willingness of population to practice agriculture 4.Value addition to Aloe, basketry, honey and livestock products

29 TUBAE SUCCESS Establishment of three aloe cottage industries in Turkana south, Loima and Turkana West runned by our own member organizations Production of industrial Aloe products, SOAPS, LOTION, SHAMPOO, LIQUID DETERGENT (OMO), Aloe gum (Mawe ya supili), skin tonic (those who want to be like the whites) Propagation (planting of 39 Aloe farms across Turkana county) Construction of premises to process Aloe products First to attain collective trade mark in Kenya (ECHUCHUKA) Products have adhered to the normal legal frame work; approved by KEBs, Bar code of Kenya and acceptable world wide Training of communities on management of Natural resources mainly Aloe, resin (Ekinyate), incense (Elubai), gum Arabica (eminae) Partnership and linkages – worked with Practical action, LWF (Lutheran world federation), Lodwar diocese and GOK departments that deal with environment CDTF who are funding ENVIRONMENT PROJECT entitled: turkana environment & poverty reduction project (TEPEP) in three district for the next three years (jan, ) Pragya India –Education for 3 months July,- Sept, 2012 UNDP-K Amkeni waKenya Governance & peace project for 6 months

30 Challenges Inadequate funds to fully implement components in line with beneficiaries needs Staff inadequate no funds to support and sustain Logistical problem in relation to insecure project areas i.e. Oropoi going by motor cycle, Juluk with Lorogon issue unsettled No funds for research which is required to inform the project on the needs and projects demand mapping of NRM has not been done in Turkana Duplication of projects with no zoning, mapping who is where, doing what, where to partner
