49cc Gas Powered Skateboard
Objective Our primary objective is to model, assemble, and animate the intricate workings of a 49cc gas-powered motorized skateboard. The skateboard obtains power via a 49 cubic centimeter 2- stroke engine. This power is then transmitted to a crankshaft via a centrifugal toe-clutch, akin to those found in modern chainsaws. The modeling of the project primarily involves, but is not limited to, the gearbox, the motor, as well as the deck, tires, the outer polymer casings of the engine and gearbox, and others.
Challenges The primary challenge our team will face will be disassembling the engine and transmission and correctly measuring all the parts. This challenge has been further complicated because we were unable to receive schematics of the device. Because we cannot rely on schematics, it makes our measurements so much more important. However, many of the pieces are oddly shaped which makes their measurements difficult to take. Also, because the engine is old and worn; a lot of the bolts are stripped and hard to remove after several years of abuse.

Difficulties We Faced and Modifications The chain connecting the drives, and the springs connecting the axles to the deck can be modeled, but due to the myriad chain links the animation and regeneration for such a part would take too much time. Due to the inability to separate the engine block, the crank shaft at that location had to be estimated. The deck of the skateboard was made of fiberglass and pressed into a form, it was a shell that varied in thickness; this was exceedingly difficult to model and therefore had to be treated as a solid. We were unable to model the fuel injection system due to the fact that it involved many hoses and wires which at this time we are unable to model.
