PaoliIME Internal Review Slide 2 Subsystem overview Realization of all the hard works to reduce the anthropogenic noise into the experimental buildings Main tasks: replacement/relocation of the HVAC machines improvement of insulation of the air flow distribution systems realization of acoustically isolated rooms Other tasks: reduction of the high reverberation time of the halls (this could become a main task) infrastructural works needed for AdV (modification of electric power systems, basements for LN 2 tanks, support for towers displacement, etc.) Reference doc: “IME Report to IRC – Infrastructure modifications: proposed strategy for noise reduction”

PaoliIME Internal Review Slide 3 Interactions IME activity proceeds in connection with the noise hunting activity of V+ Commissioning It shall interact with the other subsystems to obtain specifications for the realization of the infrastructures (e.g. INJ for max level of noise in the LL, DET for max level of noise in the central hall, SAT for the thermal stability of the hall, etc.) It will work in parallel with DAQ and VAC to realize the needed modifications and upgrades of the infrastructures

PaoliIME Internal Review Slide 6 Proposed solutions A preliminary project of the mitigation works has been carried out, defining both a reference solution and possible alternatives Here are reported some drawings and the summary of the preliminary cost evaluations The works have been divided into 6 macro categories (HVAC machine relocation, IMMS implementation, HVAC air distribution, Electronics/vacuum pumps relocation, Halls acoustic damping, Support works to the other Subsystems) according to the planning and the IME-WBS As general approach, we observe that part of the proposed works is required not only for noise mitigation, but also for extraordinary maintenance: in same cases they represent an improvement of the performances and reliability of the systems (e.g. substitution of obsolete equipments of 15 years 24/24h running time) as well as an improvement of their working conditions (e.g. relocation of machines in more adequate locations, with proper service spaces and easily accessible) For an easier analysis and comparison, the works have been specified for each experimental building

PaoliIME Internal Review Slide 17 Conclusions The interventions of mitigation proposed by IME are based on the studies carried out during V/V+ commissioning and the experience acquired in the past years from the equipments’ operation. Proposed solutions are mainly focused on the modification of HVAC systems and the realization of acoustically isolated rooms to displace the most relevant noise-inducing machines Preliminary evaluations show that the displacement of the HVAC machines out of the buildings does not imply a relevant difference of costs compared with their repositioning in the current location, while leading to significant advantages. Proposed solutions are based on the hypothesis of the optimization of the current systems configuration, with the “classical” solution of displacing the most relevant sources of noise as far as possible. These interventions are strictly correlated to the general strategies that shall be tackled at a superior level of the project (e.g. HVAC mitigation could be obtained reducing as mach as possible the air flow in the halls, but this would require to minimize the inside thermal loads or the thermal stability of the towers).
